Memories and Flowers Preserved by Eureka Florist

Elegant Petals, a new full-service floral and gift shop in Eureka, also is in the business of preserving memories from any special occasion.  Using a freeze drying procedure to preserve the flowers, the staff then encases the delicate petals in frames, shadow boxes, or table top displays.

Kathy Williams, owner of Elegant Petals, said, "We want to create a design to help our clients recall good memories."

Williams said they have preserved floral designs from weddings, anniversaries, dance recitals, graduations, and funeral memorials.  They offer a variety of packages, and will tailor them to meet clients' needs and budgets.  She said package and design details are discussed during the initial 30-minute consultation between the client and the florist.

A typical wedding shadow box could include flowers from the bridal bouquet, a wedding invitation, a garter, and the wedding toast glasses, she said. 

A frame or shadow box for a memorial generally includes some of the flowers, a prayer card, photos, and other small mementos.

Williams also has created shadow boxes for some of the area's fallen soldiers.  The family of soldiers oftentimes includes many of the interests and hobbies of the solider, such as local professional sports memorabilia and collectables.

The freeze drying process used at the shop can take anywhere from six to eight weeks.  Williams said the flower petals are preserved in their original shape and color, with a life-span of at least a decade.

The Elegant Petal floral shop, which is located at 15 E. Fifth St., carries a large selection of fresh floral arrangements and gifts.  Williams said their candle centerpieces and a floral design including a small sled have been popular this holiday season. 

She said they also will deliver flowers and gifts up to a 30-mile radius from Eureka, including Wildwood and St. Albans.
