Amtrak Station in Eureka? Readers Say, 'Yes, Please'

Almost nobody who commented opposed the idea. Now...what's next?

Unfortunately, we don't have much more to report about the prospects for an Amtrak station in Eureka raised a few weeks ago by Mayor Kevin Coffey and members of the city council.

We've reached out to the mayor to see if he's got any more information about where that proposal might be headed. But it sure did get readers talking. Almost everyone who commented on our original article and on our Facebook page loved the idea.

Officials in Eureka and the Missouri state legislature had expressed interest to the railway about building a station in the city — which would be the only stop on the Missouri River Runner route between Washington and Kirkwood.

Our original story on Patch was shared 129 times on Facebook and got 27 comments. Here's what some of you had to say.

"I'm gonna be honest, I don't know how I feel about it. For one, where would it be put that would be accessible?" said Jen Rickards-Fuchs. "Not only are there two sets of tracks to deal if, there are residential houses and business around downtown Eureka. I agree it would be nice having a station closer and it could boost business, but making it happen is another thing. Guess we will just have to see."

"Years and years and years ago there was one I believe," wrote Mark Duecker. "Great idea."

"I wonder if we could ride the train to downtown? Use it as a commuter rail?" wrote . J Baynes. "Would have to be cheaper and faster than the 410X Express Bus."

"I would have loved to have a station in Eureka during my travels," wrote Jess Poertner. "It would be awesome if they could put one in. I'm sure it would help a lot of people."

"I would love it not only would I use it but it would bring business to your shop and restaurants," wrote Lora Lenhart.
