ReplyMary Ann:
Your comments are very spot on. A "thundershirt" can be purchased, a t-shirt or towel is less effective than the use of ace-bandages, wrapped according to the dog's stress level.
Acepromazine does just make the dog physically unable to respond to stress but does nothing to alleviate mental anxiety, and it can be argued that because of the physical immobilization that mental stress is greater. Rescue Remedy is a wonderful Back Flower essense, but I have had far greater success wtih L-Theanine, a naturally occuring amino acid in the same family of L-Tryptophan. It comes in 100, 200, and 400 mg capsules and is what I call a "dose to effect" remedy, meaning that I will give it until the calming effect is garnered. Like Vitamin C, it is hard to overdose even if traditional medication is also being administered, excess is simply excreted by the kidneys. You can find this in human health food stores or Whole Foods, I get mine online at www.painstresscenter.com. I have trouble finding anything greater than the 100 mg dose locally, and I have large breed dogs.
Thank you for your thougthts and advice,

ReplyHey Gary, glad you found it. Shelties, eh? Among the most sound sensitived dogs in existence, but you sound like the boy that you have is bomb-proof. What kind of chickens do you have, and where are you? I don't know if you have been following my friend Guy Niere's plight in the city of Black Jack - he is fighting for his chickens. He was written up as an education article in the Post Dispatch and the mayor did not know that there were chickens in his municipality and now they are trying to get rid of them - he is breeding the rare Black Spanish Penedesencas and trying to preserve them, but it does not look good for his efforts.
The vest you are referring to is called an Anxiety Wrap or Thunder Storm Phobia Wrap, depending on who you get it from. One can emulate the same effect with an ace bandage or two, depending on the size of the dog. It was created by the Tellington Touch people from Colorado, who work on focusing mental states with physical affects, and is highly functional in its work. I could dig up some more research and/or product referrals if needed - thank you for bringing this up, this is the time of year that gets REALLY busy for these sorts of dogs.
Dorene, and Quill (now nearing 9 years old) and Anna (14 years old) - both of them getting pretty severe Storm/Noise Anxiety

ReplyOK Jan, Solombe, Gary - did you get the new article? I hope that it helped - it sounds like you might have some sound phobic dogs. The herding group is NOTORIOUS for that - I have worked with puppy mill Shelties for over 20 years and also live with Border Collies for my Canada geese work - wow! - way sound sensitive. I hope any advice helps you if you need it.

ReplyBriana, thank you for your comments. I am so sorry that you are suffering the same mindless prosecution. If there are no complaints, if you have substantiating records of health/code/cleanliness compliance, vet records, etc, if neighbors are not in opposition to your operations, then this should be a moot point. If nothing else, you should be created and held up to as a STANDARD of how sustainable living should be pursued, and there is an entire nation full of states of people who are doing what you are doing, down to roof tops of sky risers in New York City.
Good luck with your gardens and bees and chickens, I wonder if there is a way that Byrnes Mill and Black Jack can confer with one another and get more educated about a movement that has swept the nation - with POSITIVE INFLUENCE - for more than a decade.

ReplyJerry, thank you for your insight. I am not a St. Louis native but now I do remember this case. I will pass your comment onto Guy - he is sure appreciating all the support. He walked into his bank today and they all yelled: "LOOK! It's the Chicken Man!" I am so heartened to hear that you think that you think that the mayor might back down. Many people are VERY adamant that the mayor is on a witch hunt and is power hungry and is very unpopular in very many ways right now. Interestingly, horses are not banned in Black Jack ... why??? ... because? ... maybe because the McCourts have horses???? Gee, must be a selective banning on hobbies. A horse was running down Old Halls Ferry just last week in traffic, but I guess little fuzzy chickens are more dangerous.
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it, I will pass it on to Guy -

ReplyThe meeting was extraordinarily well supported and attended, even the mayor expressed surprise at the numbers of people who spoke in favor of keeping chickens. I hope that he will reconsider. The council people were very generous with their time afterward and stayed on to speak with many of us individually to further understand our points of view. I am hoping for a positive outcome for all of the Black Jack residents.

ReplyDear "CRS":
Thank you for your kind words, I have passed them on. You have had quite a history with the Wildlife Rescue Center, my goodness, it sounds like you are a saint, yourself! I used to work at Tri-City Animal and Bird Clinic for 11 years and we used to be their vet, and when we founded Geese Peace St. Louis and when I started my goose management company, I logged in many hours working there. I am going to be writing up a piece on them soon. Thank you for singing their praises, they are helped by many volunteers and can always use donations. Do you volunteer with an organization, or are you just involved with wildlife?
Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there,
Dorene

Gary:
Thank you so much for your concern - I just left him a message asking him and forwarded your link. I have not heard of the Ferguson problem, I will have to look into it, it does sound pretty ludicrous.
