Debate, Decision About Definition of "Family" Postponed
A legal battle is under way over whether friends living together violates Eureka's housing law. A restraining order keeps Eureka from evicting the two women. The next hearing with a St. Louis County judge is Jan. 17.
At the heart of a current lawsuit in Eureka is whether two women, who are both single mothers living in the same household, constitutes a "family" versus a renter and subleasee arrangement. A court hearing about the matter scheduled earlier this month was reset for Jan. 17, said the women's attorney Nicholas Higgins. To stop the women from being evicted, Higgins sought the county's protection and filed a temporary restraining order against the city of Eureka.
