What's Closed on Veterans Day 'Monday,' Plus Free Items to Veterans

While Sunday, Nov. 11, was truly Veterans Day, the federal holiday is being observed today (Monday) because this year the date fell on Sunday. There are an estimated 21.5 million living military veterans.

In the United States, Veterans Day is observed on Nov. 11. However, when the legal public holiday for Veterans Day occurs on a Sunday—like it did yesterday—then the following Monday is designated for holiday leave. Thus, today is considered to be a federal holiday, which means Eureka City Hall and Wildwood City Hall will be closed. Banks and municipal courts will be closed, and there will be no postal service. Also note the following, local entities will offer free items to veterans on Monday only: Two important notes for Veterans Day-related deals at any stores: Background of the Holiday: Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for …

Veterans, First Responders Honored at Eureka High School

Thursday's Veterans Day Celebration honored those whose "dedication and service ensures security and safety at home and around the world." A Koren War veteran guest speaker shed light on a conflict that was not officially declared "over."

"One percent of the U.S. population protects the other 99 percent," a Korean War veteran told guests and Eureka High School students at Thursday's Veterand Day Celebration. Guest speaker John Robertson recounted what his experience was like to be part of 6,000 enlisted in 17 units, and he reminded all that the Korean War was never offically declared concluded. "So we could find ourselves back there." Robertson had a 38-year career in the U.S. Marine Corp and National Guard. He served as a police officer for 32.5 years as well. Thursday's Veterans Day Ceremony was hosted by the school's Character Education Committee members. As guests entered the school, they were greeted by members of the symphonic strings group. Missouri's 81st Air Force …

Veterans Honored at Most Sacred Heart School

Eureka students of all ages focused on a variety of military service contributors, culminating in a visit from a Vietnam War veteran on Friday morning.

Out of 210 who went to flying school for a certain Vietnam War squad, only 55 came home alive, veteran Bill Voss told middle schoolers at Most Sacred Heart School in Eureka on Friday for their Veterans Day observation program. Voss, a Wildwood resident who now works as an American Family Insurance agent, told Sacred Heart middle schoolers as the guest speaker of the day that he still loves to fly. "I survived (war situations) by keeping my faith and praying for calm," said Voss, as he related what it was like to have to perform low-level helicopter maneuvers moments after flying above 1,500 feet out of firing range. Sacred Heart teacher Connie Bachmann also encouraged a veterans hall of honor at the school, for which students brought …

Salute to 'The Old Blogger'

George Weber of Eureka served in the military back in the day. He now blogs about Eureka developments, the state of affairs and the global economy as he heads toward 87 years old.

As Veterans Day weekend comes to a close, Eureka-Wildwood Patch would like to salute a particular, former U.S. Marine:  George Weber, aka The Old Blogger. He has faced many situations in his life, which readers get a glimpse of through his blogs. We are grateful for his perspectives and historical captures, as well as his military service on behalf of our freedoms. As evidenced by Weber's ever-present cap, also in the accompanying photo, that sports the Latin words "Semper Fi," (translates to "Always Faithful"), he continues to wear it in support of his Marine experience. The phrase Semper Fidelis was adopted by the United States Marine Corps as its motto in 1883. Weber attended the 9th annual Veterans Day Celebration conducted at Eureka …

Saluting Veterans at Eureka High School

LARGE PHOTO GALLERY: A combination of veterans, firefighters, police officers and emergency responders were honored Wednesday at Eureka High School's 9th annual Veterans Day Celebration.

Honoring those who serve others was the theme of a special event on Wednesday when Eureka High staffers and students hosted the school's 9th annual Recognition Luncheon to acknowledge more than 50 veterans, police officers and firefighters.  "This is really, really nice," said Elizabeth Cox, a St. Peter's resident who is the grandmother of a Eureka student, Ryan Scarry. Her husband served in the Air Force. She was at the event with Scarry's uncle, Gary Cox. Cox said she wished her other son, David Cox, could have joined them because he was one of three U.S. Marine survivors when a bomb went off in Beirut and killed 230 of his fellow soldiers. "But he's working today," she said. Eureka student and member of the school's Character Education …

Wall of Fame Displays Veterans' Names

One part of the 9th annual Veterans Day Celebration at Eureka High School held Wednesday was a wall of fame with the personal names of soldiers honored.

Eureka High School junior student Ashley Cheney explained the history of Veterans Day during a ceremony held for veterans, police officers and firefighters held at the school on Wednesday. The ceremony was followed by a luncheon. She noted that the observation originally marked the end of World War I and was held on Nov. 11, 1918. The following year, President Woodrow Wilson declared it to be called Armistice Day. And by 1938, Nov. 11 was designated a legal U.S. holiday. Cheney, a Wildwood resident and member of the school's Character Education Program, emphasized that the holiday was dedicated to world peace. After World War II and the Korean Conflict in 1954, the name of the holiday was amended to include the word "veterans," she said. …

Veterans Thanked, Honored at Middle School

LaSalle Springs Middle School students invited family and friends who are veterans to an assembly. Almost 50 came.

Some teachers at LaSalle Springs Middle School thought their students were missing a huge lesson. “The opportunity to thank a veteran, to me was the biggest history lesson,” eighth-grade history teacher Rhonda Kloeppel said. So Kloeppel, and fellow teachers Bergen Toth and Andria Angelo, last year, organized the school’s first effort to invite as many neighbors, family and friends of our students and staff who are veterans. They had a good turnout, and nearly doubled it this year. Forty-eight veterans came to the school to be thanked. "That was our goal," Kloeppel said, "to get as many veterans here as possible to thank them." “We think it's really important for our students to understand about patriotism, and about what our veterans have …

Veterans Eat Free at Eureka Applebee's Nov. 11

Look for a special tent in the parking lot of Applebee's Restaurant in Eureka on Nov. 11. Applebee's offer includes both veterans and active military representatives.

With the successful veterans' service event last year on Veterans Day, Eureka Memorial VFW Post 5468 will again host Veterans Service Officer Bud Lane at the Eureka Applebee's on Friday. Last year, Lane processed 13 Veterans Administration benefit claims for area veterans. This activity is held in conjunction with Applebee's annual "Veterans Eat Free" Veterans' Day promotion. Lane's event will be set in a tent from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Applebee's parking lot at 198 Eureka Towne Center Dr. on Friday. In what has become a neighborhood tradition, Applebee's thanks veterans and troops by inviting them for a free signature entrée on Nov. 11 each year. This is the third year that Applebee's will salute the nation's military, hoping to top the 1,…
