Confessions of a Trivia Night Planner: Hard or Not—That Is the Question
A trivia night organizer shares how difficult it is to create one.
Hosting a trivia night is, no doubt, a balancing act. I've hosted a fair number of these events, and this is how it typically pans out: Players expect the questions to be intriguing, yet at the same time, not so intriguing that they are too hard. On the other hand, if you make the questions too easy, you'll overhear some people—who really want to be overheard—scoffing at your questions. Some players might even feel as if you're being condescending. So, the recipe for a successful trivia night includes making each team a potential competitor—with interesting questions to boot. E.J.- a great column! Trivia nights are a favorite of mine but I can't imagine why since I am always disappointed by them. One that I went to must have been organized by someone with a 6-to- 8 -year-old girl, because half of the questions concerned either Disney heroines, Miley Cyrus or that ilk.
