Toys For Tots Drive Exceeds Goal in Eureka

One man donated several hundred figurines from his private Star Wars collection.

U.S. Marines representing the Toys for Tots program said they definitely wanted to handle the annual Eureka pickup because it's such a good turnout of toys and community citizens for the donation send-off. Three Marines on Friday picked up 1,161 toys from The Wallach House Antiques and Home Furnishings. That's more than this year's goal of 1,000, and definitely better than last year's total of 787 items. Sgt. Gavin Lewis of the U.S. Marines said they started picking up toys in mid-November. "It's going great, and we're just getting to the busy locations of gas stations and businesses, like what's happening in Eureka," he said. Toys For Tots Boosted by Eurekans

Eureka business leaders and city employees collected Toys For Tots donations for the fourth year in a row; donations increased from last year, even during these tough economic times.

U.S. Marines picked up 787 donations Friday from Eureka for the annual Tots For Tots drive. Spearheaded by Mary Wallach and Laurie Price of The Wallach House in Eureka, they said the quality of toys this year seemed especially good. Price said six more boxes than last year were out around town, and that the cailber and variety of toys should be commended. Sgt. Gavin Lewis of the U.S. Marines said they work with 250 organizations and church groups, as well as through the Demetrius Johnson Foundation, to identify recipients, but that the toys are meant to stay in St. Louis County and St. Louis.
