The columnist for the Post-Dispatch talked to residents in the area who doubt that the St. Louis Cardinals star was just avoiding a deer.
St. Louis Cardinals fans gasped collectively at news that 2011 World Series most valuable player David Freese of Wildwood had been in a single-car accident on Nov. 22. Was he OK? Was alcohol involved for the player whose history has included drinking and driving? The answer, St. Louis County police said, was yes, he was fine and no, alcohol wasn't involved. Freese swerved to avoid a deer, police said. Now, a column by Bill McClellan in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch casts doubt on that story. McClellan talked to two people who were in the vicinity at the time of the wreck on Thanksgiving afternoon: A cyclist named Dave Fleming and a neighbor of the home where Freese's car took out a fence named Jim Mathis. Both acknowledge that deer are …

The agency recently used money from the Department of Homeland Security to purchase two new vehicles worth a total of $600,000.
A grant from the Department of Homeland Security has allowed the St. Louis County Police Department to equip its Tactical Operations Unit with a new specialized equipment truck and an armored vehicle. The two vehicles will help the unit’s SWAT team be able to respond more effectively and efficiently to various kinds of threats, from “active shooters” to a biological terrorist attack. Bureau of Patrol Support Commander Capt. John Belmar said the $240,000 equipment truck and $360,000 armored vehicle were paid for entirely by the grant, but the money was not easy to come by. “We were pretty stoked about it,” he said. “It is a lot of hard work to not only apply for [the grant] but to be in the position to accept it.” The role of local law …
