For the 14th straight year, the Cardinals resolved arbitration cases without needing hearings. Hometown hero David Freese announced his agreement Friday afternoon, albeit for only one year.
Wildwood native and baseball's Most Valuable Player in both the National League Championship Series and World Series David Freese will play "at home" again in St. Louis, at least for another year. Freese was arbitration-eligible for the first time this year, and filed last month for a salary of $3.75 million. The St. Louis Cardinals countered with a $2.4 million offer. The final figure arrived at Friday afternoon was $3.15 million, when both sides agreed on a one-year deal for 2013. Freese was one of five arbitration-eligible players the Cardinals had to negotiate with this offseason, and was the last to reach an agreement, as reported by Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com. Freese earned $508,000 last season, she reported. The third baseman turns…

The team announced Tuesday that the veteran pitcher is still dealing with effects of previous injury that sidelined him for most of 2012. Mercy doctors will likely be involved in evaluating what happens next.
The Mercy partnership with the St. Louis Cardinals as the team's official medical provider will get a high-profile start. The team announced Tuesday that Chris Carpenter, sidelined for most of the 2012 with thoracic outlet syndrome, will likely not pitch in 2013 after having trouble with offseason workouts. In a news conference broadcast on local media outlets, Cardinals VP and General Manager John Mozeliak announced that Carpenter would "utlize the Mercy network" among others in finding a way forward, after the player notified the team Friday that he was unable to throw at a high velocity after otherwise having had "a normal offseason," according to Mozeliak. Mozeliak said there were issues with numbness and stingers in his shoulder and …

Everyone's got a story about the St. Louis Cardinals' legend, right? Musial died Saturday.
Stan "The Man" Musial, the St. Louis Cardinals legend who was widely considered "the greatest Cardinal," died on Saturday. That's the news that broke on Saturday. Today, we're interested in your stories about the pitcher-cum-outfielder who played for the Redbirds from 1941 to 1963. As a relatively newcomer to St. Louis (only here 11 years!) I can't say I have a lot of memories of Musial beyond meeting countless compatriots at the Musial statue at the last two versions of Busch Stadium. How about you? What do you remember about Musial? Your parents' memories? Yours?

The St. Louis Cardinal icon and baseball hall of fame outfielder passed away Saturday night.
Stan Musial, a giant in the St. Louis community and the baseball world for more than half a century, died Saturday at his home in Ladue. "Stan the Man passed peacefully at home at 5:45 pm tonight of natural causes. Life will never be the same without baseball's perfect knight," his grandson, Brian Musial Schwarze said via Twitter Saturday evening. Musial was 92 and had been in poor health in recent years. Musial, who entered baseball's Hall of Fame in 1969, played 22 years for the St. Louis Cardinals, amassing 3,630 hits and 24 All-Star Game appearances in a career full of superlatives. Said the Cardinals in posting word of Musial's death: Musial, father of three daughters and a son, was unpretentious, untroubled, friendly and folksy. The…

The Giants beat the Cardinals 9-0 in Game 7 to end the Redbirds' 2012 season.
There will be no World Series in St. Louis this season. There will be no parade down Market Street, no 12th world championship and no rematch of the 2006 Fall Classic. Monday night in San Francisco the Cardinals hopes of a repeat of 2011 were ended at the hands of the Giants. Just like in 1996, the Cardinals, with a new manager, had a 3-1 lead in the National League Championship series. And, just like in '96, the Cards failed to get win No. 4, losing in Game 7 in a blowout. The Cardinals were done in by a series of miscues and the inability to get a big basehit. But, credit the San Francisco, the Giants had to play perfect to come back and did just that. The loss in California closes the book on an interesting season for the Cardinals…

A guide to watching Game 6, Oct. 21, 2012, of the National League Championship Series.
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter takes on the San Francisco Giants' Ryan Vogelsong when the National League Championship Series continues in San Fran's AT&T Park at 6:30 p.m. With Friday's loss, the Redbirds hang onto a 3-2 lead in the NLCS and still could clinch the National League pennant with a win. The broadcast airs on FOX2, featuring play-by-play with Joe Buck, analysis from Tim McCarver, along with field reporters Erin Andrews and Ken Rosenthal. Temperatures should be in the lower 60s to upper 50s around game time, and mostly cloudy. The Cardinals took a two-game lead on Thursday, setting National League Championship Series at 3-1. The winner of the Cards-Giants series faces the Detroit Tigers in the World Series after …

I am a former TWA flight attendant and was fortunate enough to have STAN THE MAN on a short flight one day. He came prepared to sign autographs for anyone who wanted one....always accomodating. As a crew menber, I hesitated to invade his privacy but I just couldn't help myself on this occasion so I produced my son, Dan's, little league card. Without skipping a beat, Stan wrote "To Dan the Man …   more ›
