Monarch Will Extend Half-Price Smoke Alarm Campaign

With the initial number of reduced price smoke alarms almost claimed, Monarch Fire Protection District has ordered another 600 to be made available for residents.

Monarch Fire Protection District's partnership with the Home Depot to make smoke alarms available for district residents at a reduced price is continuing, Fire Marshal Roger Herin told fire board members at Thursday's meeting. Monarch initially had 600 hard-wired smoke detectors provided by Home Depot for residents to purchase at $10.90 each, in comparison to the typical $16 retail price, Herin said. "It's been a great program so far," Herin said Thursday. "We plan to continue this program as long as Home Depot can hold at that price." Residents can also arrange for Monarch to install the smoke detectors free of charge. Herin said some homes need one smoke detector, others need 10, with an average of three to four needed per home. Smoke Detectors will be Checked Saturday

Saturday reflects the 26th annual Smoke Detector Day held in the Eureka Fire Protection District. Look at how many alarms and batteries have been donated and installed in homes since the initiative was started.

Eureka Fire Protection District firefighters will visit a specific area of the district Saturday, Nov. 3, to check smoke detectors. This event is done twice each year to concede with daylight saving time, said Deputy Chief Randy Gabel. Firefighters and team members will go door-to door on Jim Weber Road and roads located off of that area this year to ask homeowners if their smoke detectors are working. Firefighters will ask to come in and inspect the smoke detectors, said Gabel. "If a new battery is needed, one will be installed. If the home does not have a working smoke detector, a new one will be installed for free," he said. "To date we have visited over 2862 homes, installed 429 smoke alarms and given out 888 batteries." Smoke Detectors' Team Coming Saturday

Fresh batteries and new smoke detectors are available from the Eureka Fire Protection District.

Eureka Fire Protection District firefighters will visit the southeastern portion of Eureka on Saturday morning as part of the 23rd annual Smoke Detector Day they conduct. Eureka Fire Deputy and Fire Marshal Scott Mullins said to date, local firefighting teams have visited more than 2,261 homes, installed 399 smoke alarms and provided 810-plus batteries. The following Eurekan neighborhoods or streets in Jefferson County will be visited Saturday: Firefighters and Eureka SAR and Eureka C.E.R.T. team members will be going door-to-door in the designated areas to ask homeowners if their smoke detectors are working.
