Moms Talk: Dealing With Storms

Today's online forum for busy Eureka and Wildwood moms to trade important tips and opinions reflects all our recent severe weather. Please chime in!

We have had severe storms almost weekly for a month now. While keeping my family safe, it's hard to keep from scaring the kids unnecessarily.   We talk about when and where to go when the warnings are given, they actively watch the weather to keep the family updated, and everyone has a 'buddy' when we go to the basement (the dog, the cat, etc.). While we are in the basement, we pray, play games, read, and listen to the weather radio for updates.  All of this has seemed to help my future seventh grader stay calmer during the warnings. Do you have stressed-out kids during severe weather?   What do you do to keep them from 'freaking out'? Editor's Note:  Diane Engle is a member of our Eureka-Wildwood new Moms' Council, which is a group of …

Kids will mirror your behavior. If you are calm, they will be also. When the storms start, I watch the radar, winds and satellites. Educating yourself on how extreme weather builds and what to watch for yourself so you don't have to hide out in the basement waiting for someone else to tell you it's over is your best defense against storm anxiety in your household. My kids know that the sirens go …   more ›

Good Friday Tornadoes & Aftermath

Apparent Tornado Rips Though Lambert Airport Causing Major Damage, Injuries; Airport Closed

A powerful storm pounded St. Louis Lambert International Airport on Friday evening.

Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is closed until further notice, after an apparent tornado caused major damage and injuries on Friday evening. At a news conference at the airport on Friday night, St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said the airport was hit by a severe storm with heavy winds and that there was a sighting of a tornado, but that had not been confirmed. "That storm caused significant damage to the airport, specifically to Terminal One,  where most of the damage occurred," Slay said.  Power was out to the airport Friday night and four people were transferred to the hospital with minor injuries, the mayor said. Lambert Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge said Concourse C experienced extensive damage. She said most of the windows in …

Severe Weather Training in Wildwood Certifies Local Spotters

Tips from a TV weather expert prepare everyday folks.

Some visitors to Wildwood City Hall last week ran headlong into inhospitable weather. But after confronting tornadoes, flash floods and lightning strikes, the visitors were official Level 1 "severe weather spotters." In fact, they graduated with a special certification on Thursday, thanks to a lot of help and expertise from Michael Redman, who hosts The Traveling Weather Show. Since 1972, Redman's severe weather classes have turned thousands of everyday people into severe weather spotters, enabling them to report threatening cloud formations and file hail reports. Redman retired as a radio system engineer after 36 years with the St. Louis County Police Department. He also managed the county's severe weather SKYWARN program and the Radio …
