Warning Signs Erected on One of Missouri's Most Dangerous Two-Lane Roads Near Eureka

Missouri Department of Transportation employees install signs along Route FF near Eureka this week.

During the same week Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) employees installed new caution signs along curves on Highway FF near Eureka, a serious accident happened on the roadway. MoDOT data indicates Highway FF has a crash rate of at least 25 percent over the statewide average for a two-lane road. Reviews of traffic reports reveal Highway FF was the site of 129 accidents during 2006 to 2010, including three fatalities. "As promised, we should have the majority of the signs up by the end of the year, pending weather delays," said Judy Wagner, P.E., Missouri Department of Transportation area engineer for Franklin and Jefferson Counties. Wagner said they still have several of the sign post delineators to install when they get them, …

Speeders Not Slowing for I-44 Work

Monday’s focus by Highway Patrol officers netted 33 speeders as well as tailgaters and other violations along Interstate 44 between Eureka and Fenton

Despite warning signs posted for miles, rumble strips, hundreds of traffic cones, concrete barriers, crash barrels and the constant presence of heavy equipment, getting drivers to slow down for the construction on Interstate 44 at Antire Road etween Fenton and near Eureka remains a stubborn problem. During an eight-hour focus on traffic safety on Monday, eight Missouri Highway Patrol troopers stopped more than 100 vehicles, issuing more than 70 warnings and 66 summonses, according to Troop C Captain Ronald Johnson. Half the summonses were for speeding, Johnson said. Six were for following too closely, while other drivers were cited for an assortment of violations. Only two of the violations were given to drivers of commercial vehicles, and…

Bridget Coluccio, sadly, that hasn't been my experience. Only a small percentage of big truck drivers drive professionally. The rest think they can intimidate the smaller vehicles by tailgating them to get them out of their way. The vast majority drive above the posted speed limits unless there's a cop nearby. It's time they ALL started driving and acting more professionally and quit driving like…   more ›

Missouri Department of Transportation crews took stretch of Route 141 between Parkway Central High School and St. Luke's Hospital down to one lane.

On Saturday morning, St. Louis County officials held a ribbon cutting on the new section of Route 141 that stretches from Ladue to Olive. There was a 10K run in the morning, and thousands of people showed up just to stroll or pedal the fresh concrete. Unfortunately, the road is not quite finished. Missouri Department of Transportation spokespersons stated in a news release that although much of the new Route 141 opened this weekend, drivers can expect continued lane restrictions through the remainder of the project.  (Sign up here for the FREE Eureka-Wildwood Patch morning newsletter, which includes developments such as this and Breaking News Alerts.) Motorists Urged to Alter Travel Times During I-44 Antire Construction

Delays and long lines of traffic already are occurring on Interstate 44 at the Eureka Antire Road construction zone of the U.S. highway. What alternate routes can anyone suggest?

Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) crews, along with contractor, Millstone Bangert, this week started the major impact of construction with one eastbound lane closed on Interstate 44 from Lewis Road in Eureka to Missouri Route 141. One eastbound lane will be closed around-the-clock until mid-September as part of a pavement replacement project on I-44 at Antire Road near Eureka. MoDOT officials remind motorists they will experience traffic delays on I-44 with this one-lane closure during morning peak travel times, especially from 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. Motorists can expect morning travel times to increase by up to 7 minutes to 20 minutes. We just came through westbound I-44 this evening at approximately 10:45 p.m., and the eastbound Antire Road traffic was really backed up for quite a ways, even at this time of night. Lots of trailer trucks in the crawling, and mostly stopped, line during the portion with the lane closure. It was surprising that much traffic was present this late.   more ›

Help Save Lives: Submit Comments to Missouri Highways and Transportation Commissioners

Eureka's One Curve At A Time founder says the deadline is June 1 to submit public comments to Missouri transportation officials who will vote on the final list of statewide roadway projects to fund the next several years.

As of today, residents only have 15 days left to voice their support of keeping the proposed Highway FF road improvement projects top-of-mind for Missouri Highways and Transportation Commissioners who will vote on July 11 regarding final Missouri Department of Transporation projects to receive funding for the 2013-2017 period. In the draft Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for Missouri, funding for shoulders to be added along the entire stretch of Highway FF is at the top of the list. "We need your help to keep it there. Timing is critical. Don’t wait to email public comments. Missouri Department of Transportation funding is tight. If we keep Highway FF as a top priority to be funded, we can make our region safer," said …
