Air Guard Service: Wildwood Woman Continues Family Tradition

A 2007 graduate of Eureka High School, this Wildwood resident studied business and communications at St. Louis Community College and now plans to attend Webster University or the University of Missouri.

As a father, Jay Kurtz, of Wildwood, said he was slightly amused when his 24-year-old daughter, Amanda, said she needed some discipline in her life. As a veteran of the Air National Guard and part of a military family, he was pleased. So there was nothing but smiles when Amanda recently took the military oath of service and enlisted in the Missouri Air National Guard, following in the footsteps of no less than five relatives. In addition to her father, Kurtz’s grandfathers and two uncles have served in the Air National Guard. Eureka Woman Named Missouri Air Guard Senior NCO of Year

This is the first-such honor for Shawn Tamborski, 49, a single mother of five children, two of whom also serve in the Air Guard.

Eureka resident, Master Sgt. Shawn Tamborski, was named the 2012 Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year for the Missouri Air National Guard.  “I am very pleased and very proud,” stated Tamborski in an announcement. She is a 16-year Air Guard veteran, who serves with the 239th Combat Communications Squadron, headquartered at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Tamborski was among three noncommissioned officers being considered for the senior NCO of the year honor. The selection is based on recommendations from a candidate’s commanding officer, the ability to pass a fitness test and a grueling interview before a board of one’s peers. Missouri Air National Guard Chief Retires

"Anything to make life better for the men and women of the Missouri Air National Guard, that's been my focus," said Brig. Gen. Jon Kelk, a St. Louis resident. During Operation Desert Storm, he was credited with first aerial victory of the conflict.

Brig. Gen. Jon "JB" Kelk, the chief of staff of the Missouri Air National Guard, recently was honored during a farewell ceremony that marked the end of his distinguished service as a Missouri Guardsman. Kelk said he enjoyed the opportunity to be in a position that influenced the Missouri Air National Guard and benefited the adjutant general, Missouri, and the nation. "Anything we can do to make life better for the men and women of the Missouri Air National Guard, that's been my focus," Kelk said. He said there have been a lot of changes and challenges to the Missouri Air National Guard and that he was proud of it becoming a full partner in the state mission. Sidewinder's Angie Has 'The Voice'

Remember the local Air Force band that went viral when they performed an Adele song for troops? The band's lead singer is from St. Louis, and she recently made it through the selection process for the national TV program, The Voice.

Eureka and Wildwood residents can have way more fun watching this season of the national singing competition on TV's The Voice. One female singer who made it through the nerve-wracking selection process is a familiar voice and face. After gaining international fame via a YouTube video, Sidewinder—an element of the St. Louis-based 571st Air Force Band of the Missouri Air National Guard, made the rounds of national daytime television, such as "Entertainment Tonight,” Warner Brother’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and on the Fox News Network’s “Fox and Friends.” Sidewinder became an overnight sensation after a video of the band performing “Rolling in the Deep,” by Adele went viral and was viewed more than a million times in just 11 days. …
