To support a friend and a noble cause, this teenager plans to donate her 13 inches of hair, while helping raise funds for cancer research.
Eureka resident Kate Daniels, an eighth grader at LaSalle Springs Middle School in Wildwood, plans to have her head shaved bald on March 9 to help find a cure for childhood cancer. Inspired to ‘go bald’ as a result of watching her classmate and friend, Evan Pina White, battle leukemia, Daniels is raising money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a California-headquartered volunteer charity committed to funding the most promising research for childhood cancers. “I know I can raise a lot of money to help kids like Evan. I hope to raise over $5,000," said Daniels, who has had long hair her entire life. Daniels' 13 inches of brown hair also are long enough to be donated to Wigs for Kids to be used to make wigs for children battling hair loss as a …

As the barbecue smoke wafted over the trees at Zick's Great Outdoors Nursery & Landscaping Co., local people gathered last month to honor their friend who lost his life to leukemia. Every year, they call their event the "Bandana Bash." (See article published prior to event: Fight Leukemia: Bandana Bash 2011) “One-hundred percent of the food for the Bash was donated,” said Mike Hallahan, a Wildwood resident who is one of the founders of the event. In addition to the donated foods, hundreds of other donations meant that more funds can be targeted for cancer research and help for cancer victims. A command center was housed in a motorhome the volunteers pulled alongside the wood-fired cooker. As Hallahan checked on the whole hog in the …

Dash to a bash! It’s more than just a weekend food and music event. Bandana Bash 2011 also celebrates the life and legacy of West Countian Todd Zick, whose fight to find a cure for leukemia continues. Zick, who was diagnosed with the disease while still in college, succumbed to leukemia in 2010. In his short life, he organized Leukemia 24/7, and personally began bone marrow drives in Wildwood, Ballwin, St. Louis and Springfield. His family and friends continue his efforts with the TTIF (Thank Todd It’s Friday) portion of the Bash, which runs Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9-10, at Zick’s Great Outdoors Nursery & Landscaping Co., at Clayton and Strecker Roads in Wildwood. But organizers won’t let the serious reason for the event detract from…

It's not every day a teacher has a hair-raising experience at school; well, one Rockwood eighth-grade social studies instructor actually had quite the opposite.
A "Pennies for Patients" fundraising effort at LaSalle Springs Middle School in Wildwood prompted one teacher to offer a very motivating bonus if a certain financial goal was met from collecting coins to give to leukemia and lymphoma research. Thursday, that teacher made good on the promise by allowing students to shave his head. Eighth-grade social studies teacher Eric Barnhart challenged his "Adventurers" team of students to raise more than $500, or to win the school's overall team challenge, by saying he would shave off his hair if they did. The 72 students rose to the occasion. But what's even more impressive is that they are a team one-half the size of the school's other teams. The total amount raised by the school body was $708. "I…
