Some Wildwood-based seventh graders rival high school-level ACT or SAT scores. Congrats to all 43 of them.
In the 2011-2012 Duke University Talent Search, or Duke TIP, 139 seventh-grade students from Rockwood School District's six middle schools achieved state- or grand-level recognition based on their scores on college entrance exams. A list of qualifying 43 Wildwood-based students follows in this article. TIP stands for "talent identification program." It is the largest of its type of academic programs in the United States. Since its inception in 1980, more than 2 million students have participated. The Wildwood-based students are among the 63,000-plus students nationwide who participated this school year in the Duke TIP by taking the ACT or SAT alongside high school students; many earned scores that rival or surpass those achieved by older …

At least two LaSalle Springs Middle school students think so, and that led to them becoming regional winners in this year's ExploraVision competition. Students took on not-so-obvious projects during the program's 20th anniversary.
Whether solving complex medical issues or exploring new applications for existing products, students involved in one of the world's largest science-based youth competitions look into the future in their own ways. Two local students took the challenge of predicting what technology might be like 20 years from now, and this month were recognized for their innovation. Caroline Goldsby and Rebecca Newton, sixth-grade students at LaSalle Springs Middle School in Wildwood, were named regional winners in the 2012 Toshiba/NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) ExploraVision competition. Selected from thousands of entries, the students’ project is among the six chosen as regional winners for their age category. Their project proposal, contact …

Student transportation hurdles that occurred last March during a fluky sleet and snow storm on many major roadways in the Rockwood School District area prompted parent concerns and district changes. Some of those issues are back today.
Despite the warning yesterday from local meterologists regarding 2012's first winter blast, some Rockwood School District bus routes and issues left some students and their families in the lurch. Rockwood parents began sharing concerns early this morning on the Eureka-Wildwood Patch Facebook page. Michael Blacketer posted that Rockwood's notice about late-running buses came out at 8:17 a.m., "when ALL of the middle school students are already on (or at least waiting) for a bus LONG before then"—which is a great point, particularly for all families in which both parents work and decisions about children generally have to be made between 5:30 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. Another parent, Kimberly Robinson Schoch, posted on Eureka-Wildwood Patch Facebook…

LaSalle Springs Middle School students invited family and friends who are veterans to an assembly. Almost 50 came.
Some teachers at LaSalle Springs Middle School thought their students were missing a huge lesson. “The opportunity to thank a veteran, to me was the biggest history lesson,” eighth-grade history teacher Rhonda Kloeppel said. So Kloeppel, and fellow teachers Bergen Toth and Andria Angelo, last year, organized the school’s first effort to invite as many neighbors, family and friends of our students and staff who are veterans. They had a good turnout, and nearly doubled it this year. Forty-eight veterans came to the school to be thanked. "That was our goal," Kloeppel said, "to get as many veterans here as possible to thank them." “We think it's really important for our students to understand about patriotism, and about what our veterans have …

Devoting a specific project to promoting fitness and health allowed Fairway Elementary School students to plug into International Walk To School Day.
To participate in "International Walk To School Day" on Oct. 5, students and staff throughout the Rockwood School District walked and biked to school on Wednesday. Students, parents and staff at Fairway Elementary School celebrated a little early by observing the day on Sept. 28. The project is designed solely to help promote health and fitness. “Rockwood understands the importance of physical activity and the district works to promote opportunities for students and staff to get active so they can live happy, healthy lives,” said Eddie Mattison, facilitator of the district's health and physical education. “Walk and Bike to School Day is one way we can come together in celebration of health and fitness.” In addition to Walk and Bike to …

Area students develop computer games, tell interactive stories and make movies—all while having fun learning the Alice software program, one of Rockwood School District's Summer Enrichment offerings.
Some local middle schoolers this month picked up a new friend named Alice. Now they can spend part of the summer in new, virtual worlds. 'Alice' is an innovative, 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create animations. Through drop and drag methods, Alice enables users to tell stories, play interactive games or to share web-based videos. Randy Pausch, author of "The Last Lecture," was instrumental in the development of the the Alice project, along with faculty and students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, PA. The unique program was designed to give middle school students a positive, first programming experience and to spark their interests in computer science. Rockwood School District teachers, Trina Priese and …

A group of recently graduated eighth grade students from LaSalle Springs Middle School students flew to Washington, D.C., yesterday morning for a whirlwind tour of the nation's history.
Eleven local students were at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport at 4:30 a.m. yesterday morning with smiles on their faces, despite the early hour. They were all smiles because they flew to Washington, D.C., for a four-day tour. Led by eighth grade history teacher at LaSalle Springs Middle School, Rhonda Kloeppel, the group will visit a variety of memorials, museums and monuments. This is her third year to accompany students to D.C. Although chaperoned by Kloeppel, students paid their own expenses. The group was coordinated through the tour company, WorldStrides. Yesterday the group stopped at the White House, as well as the Lincoln Memorial and Vietnam Veterans Memorial. They return to Wildwood and Eureka on Sunday. The students will…

LaSalle Springs Middle School students from Wildwood see what it was like to have experienced Civil War-related occurrences at a re-enactment Wednesday at Beaumont Boy Scout Reservation near High Ridge, MO.
This week's Patch Viewfinder photo feature reflects a local remembrance of an important milestone in U.S. history: the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War (1861–1865). All eighth graders at Rockwood School District middle schools are in the process of taking field trips to the Beaumont Boy Scout Reservation in High Ridge, MO, for this unique look at a sliver of one of the bloodiest parts of American history. This group of photos was taken when eighth graders from LaSalle Springs Middle School took their field trip Wednesday. Each week in Viewfinder, Eureka-Wildwood photographers will provide you with snapshots of the community. We hope you enjoy them, and will add your own personal favorite photos as well. Talented vocal students from LaSalle Springs Middle were evaluated this Saturday at the St. Louis Suburban Solo and Small Ensemble Festival.
Eighteen select vocalist students who attend LaSalle Springs Middle School participated in the St. Louis Suburban Solo and Small Ensemble Festival held Saturday at Holman Middle School in Bridgeton, MO. Six eighth graders performed solos, while all participated in two different ensembles who were critiqued and rated by adjudicators. "Performing in a small ensemble takes different skills than performing as part of a large choir, and I know we all learn from the adjudicators' comments," said LaSalle Springs choral teacher Valerie Waterman. "I was impressed at how hard the girls worked to sing accurately and expressively together. It was also wonderful how they supported each other in their solo performances," said Waterman. She said the …

If RSD is truly concerned about our children (and their employees), instead of LISTENING to the weather updates, "they" (in response to "we" by Kim Cranston)should have WENT OUTSIDE and taken a short drive! "They" would have SEEN firsthand how many children, bus drivers, and the staff they put at risk! Next time, simply GO OUTSIDE and drive on 109...I think it will give a better picture than the …   more ›
