A Career High Scorer Helps Lancers Shake Off Poor Start

Senior forward Aareon Smith scores a career-high 28 points as Lafayette defeats Northwest, 75-44.

Lafayette High School senior forward Aareon Smith knew something was wrong with his team. The usually high-energy Lancers were stuck in low gear throughout the first half of Friday's important Suburban West Conference battle with Northwest of Cedar Hill. "It was like we were there, but we really didn't show up to play," Smith said. "We needed something to get us going." Lafayette junior Nick Messer provided the wake-up call. Messer tallied a rare four-point play early in the third period to spark a run of 18 successive points that led the Lancers to a 75-44 win in the contest at Lancer Gymnasium. Lafayette improved to 10-7 overall and 3-1 in league play. The red-hot Lancers have won three in a row and five out of their past six. Smith …

Second-Half Surge Carries Lafayette Boys' Basketball Team Past Mehlville

Lafayette High School boys' basketball team employs an effective second-half zone defense to win at Mehlville, 60-42, in a Suburban West Conference matchup.

After watching a back-and-forth first half that featured runs by both teams, Lafayette High School coach Scott Allen decided to try a 1-3-1 zone defense against Mehlville in the second half. The only question after the game turned out to be why he didn’t give that a shot much sooner. Lafayette swarmed Mehlville with its zone defense and held the Panthers to just 15 points in the second half, as the Lancers turned a one-point halftime lead into a 60-42 win at Mehlville High School in a Suburban West Conference matchup. “Our 1-3-1 was very effective in the second half,” Allen said. “I was very pleased with how we executed. It was very good for us. We stuck with it and started trapping and getting some turnovers. Give our guys credit, they …

Boys Hoops: Lafayette Cannot Hold Back Oakville

The Oakville basketball team relies on tough defense to rally past Lafayette, 46-34, on Tuesday night.

After a dominant first quarter, the Lafayette High School's offense slowed down and Oakville bounced back to beat the Lancers, 46-34, on Tuesday night. Judging by the first-quarter action between Lafayette and the Oakville Tigers, most fans would have expected a Lafayette victory. But the Lancers made many unforced, costly turnovers. The Tigers looked confused and disheveled when Lafayette's Aareon Smith sank a 3-pointer and teammate Luke Robbe soon followed with a layup as Lafayette led 10-3 after the first quarter. Oakville Head Coach Nick Traxler called a timeout at the end of the first quarter, intent on fixing the problem. "We talked about upping the intensity of our defense," he said after the game. "We knew that's what we had to do…

Resilient Lafayette Lancers Nip Kirkwood in Final Seconds

Lafayette High School basketball team bounces back from two tough recent defeats, and beats Kirkwood, 61-60, on a shot by senior forward Aereon Smith in the final seconds.

Lafayette High School's varsity boys' basketball team traveled to Kirkwood High School for a matchup Tuesday night, in a contest between two teams that are battling what turned out to be challenging starts for the season. The Lancers stood at 1-3 after losses to top area teams Chaminade and McCluer North, while Kirkwood entered the game 2-2. Perhaps the Lancers' difficult early-season experiences instilled some tenaciousness as they fought back from an 11-point deficit in the third quarter and won, 61-60, on a field goal in the final seconds by senior forward Aereon Smith. It was a close game throughout, and Lancers' head coach Scott Allen was not surprised by the ending. "Every time we get together with Kirkwood, it's a spirited game and …
