A 36-year-old man has been arrested after firing shots at a St. Louis County police officer and then leading police on a chase on Eastbound Interstate 44. An officer from the department's West County Precinct attempted to stop a Jeep Grand Cherokee for speeding Tuesday afternoon on Eastbound I-44 at the Eureka city limit, St. Louis County police say. The driver pulled over, police say. But as the officer attempted to exit his vehicle, three-to-five shots were fired out of the suspect’s vehicle through the back windshield and into the officer’s car. Missouri Department of Transportation managers released a list of major renovations and upgrades completed in 2012; several of the projects benefit Eureka and Wildwood residents.
Last year, Missouri Department of Transportation made some significant improvements to roadways in the western and southern regions of St. Louis County. Some of the projects improved what transportation professionals deem to be the busiest interstates in the greater St. Louis area. “We’ve made some extensive improvements to our interstate system to help relieve some of the problem areas during our morning and evening commutes, which helps keep the roadways safer for residents and commuters traveling through the area," stated Michelle Voegele, MoDOT’s SouthWest St. Louis County area engineer, in the release. The Missouri Department of Transportation reports its St. Louis work zones for Dec. 20-26.
The opening of an additional lane on northbound Interstate 270 and ramps on Interstate 55 will mean smoother travel for some area commuters. Wednesday afternoon, MoDOT crews opened a new northbound lane on Interstate 270 between Interstate 44 and Manchester Road (Route 100). The new lane of roadway will increase the number of vehicles that can travel through the area during morning rush hour and decrease congestion for commuters. In Jefferson County, MoDOT crews opened the eastbound Route M entrance ramp to northbound I-55 and the northbound I-55 exit ramp to Route M. A Rolla man went down an embankment off Interstate 44 late Tuesday night and then to the hospital.
A well-intended 29-year-old driver from Rolla swerved to avoid an animal that he said was on Interstate 44 Tuesday night, which caused the vehicle to veer off the right side of the roadway. Paul Runnion was driving a 2001 Honda Civic. The accident occurred at 10:50 p.m. on the westbound lanes near milemarker 246.4, according to a Missouri State Highway report. Runnion's car overturned, and was totaled. He was wearing a safety belt, according to authorities, and was taken to Mercy in Washington, MO, by a Union Emergency Medical Services crew. His injuries were deemed "minor."

Post-storm conditions likely played a role in a Wednesday evening accident on westbound Interstate 44.
A 24-year-old driver from Texas was traveling westbound on Interstate 44 Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. when the 2006 Toyota Tundra she was driving traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck a guard rail and overturned. Stephanie Stephens' accident occurred on I-44, just west of Highway 50, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol reports. Authorities indicated she was traveling too fast for the conditions. Also in the vehicle from Fort Hood, TX, were Jade Stephens, 25 years old, and Joslyn Stephens, less than 1 year old. All three family members were taken to Mercy Hospital in Washington, MO, by a Union ambulance crew. All three were wearing their seat belts. The vehicle was totaled and towed from the accident scene. Motorists from Illinois heading to events in downtown St. Louis this weekend may want to allow a little extra time, or use Metro to avoid traffic backups. All lanes on westbound Interstate 64 from the Poplar Street Bridge to 21st Street will close starting at 10 a.m., Friday. All westbound lanes will reopen by 5 a.m., Monday. One eastbound lane will be open during the weekend work. The Broadway, 10th Street and 14th Street entrance ramps to westbound I-64 will be closed this weekend. A driver was injured in a commercial truck/Jeep accident Thursday while heading westbound on Interstate 44, west of Antire Road near Eureka. Plus, transportation managers now say I-44 Antire Road project will not be complete until next month.
A Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) spokesperson stated Thursday that crews were working hard to get all eastbound and westbound lanes near Eureka from Lewis Road to Antire Road reopened by early- to mid-October, weather-permitting. The westbound exit and entrance ramp at Antire Road also is expected to open next month. The lanes originally were expected to reopen in mid-September, but MoDOT faced unexpected utility delays during the project. There also are additional pavement repairs that need to be finished before the eastbound and westbound lanes can reopen. Missouri Department of Transportation crews started work to remove and replace the driving surface of the eastbound lanes on the double-deck structure on Interstate 64 downtown. Drivers can expect one lane closed around-the-clock on eastbound Interstate 64 downtown between Jefferson Avenue and the Poplar Street Bridge. A second lane closes weekdays from 8 p.m. until 2 p.m. the following afternoon. In addition, the ramp from Forest Park Avenue to eastbound I-64 is closed around the clock. These ramp and lane closures are scheduled to remain in place until November. Missouri Department of Transportation crews will close all lanes and ramps on westbound Interstate 64 downtown between the I-44/I-55 ramp on the Poplar Street Bridge and 21st Street on the double deck structure this weekend, starting at 10 a.m. Friday to continue work to remove and replace the driving surface. Up to two eastbound lanes will be closed for safety during this work. All westbound lanes, except for the right lane, will be open by 5:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12. Lane shifts and lane closures continue on westbound and eastbound I-44 in-between Lewis Road and Antire Road near Eureka as part of a pavement reconstruction project. The changes on I-44 will remain until fall 2012. Motorists should be aware of the following on-going closures:
