Name of I-44 Fatality Revealed, Other Driver Charged with DWI

UPDATED: Interstate 44 westbound still isn't completely re-opened since today's early morning accident near Eureka, however one lane is semi-open, according to authorities. One driver since was arrested on the charge of Driving While Intoxicated.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum tells Eureka-Wildwood Patch that two crashes actually occurred this morning on westbound Interstate 44 just west of Eureka. The driver of the disabled car referenced in earlier reports ran into the I-44 guard rail on the righthand side while heading westbound on I-44, Nothum said, which caused his vehicle to spin out and eventually stop on the interstate. The driver left the car. Nothum said several drivers coming behind the car nearly hit it, but managed to swerve and miss it, after which they pulled off to the side of the roadway. New Traffic Problems Stem from I-44 Accident Overflow

It's now starting to sprinkle in the fatal accident area of Interstate 44, which obviously could contribute to slower movement, too.

Avoid the Eureka and Wildwood area of Missouri Route 109, Interstate 44 and now Fox Creek Road today. Missouri Route 100 will be next to back up. After an early morning accident on I-44 between Eureka and Pacific that resulted in a fatality, just west of Six Flags St. Louis, drivers are seeking alternative routes—but there aren't any great choices. Drivers trying to head east and north are getting trapped in the three intersections at Six Flags Road/Allenton, due to the stoplights not cycling, or rotating, due to the constant stream of westbound traffic diverted off of I-44 and underneath the overpass. The Fifth Street outer road in Eureka has been receiving more and more traffic, with some drivers, including truckers, getting off I-44 …

1 Dead in I-44 Accident Near Six Flags; Road Blocked

Authorities report a fatal accident on west bound Interstate 44, which has bottle-necked traffic. A highway patrol officer says alcohol, fog and early morning darkness were likely contributors to the accident.

Accident Recap provided/this article now updated at 9:15 a.m.:  The driver of a box truck is dead after swerving to avoid a car stopped on Interstate 44 near Six Flags this morning. Authorities have not released the name of the deceased, due to needing to notify his relatives; they do know who he is and the trucking company for which he drove. The accident that occurred on Interstate 44 at around 5:15 a.m. today has stopped westbound traffic past the intersection of Six Flags/Allenton and McDonald's. Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum told Patch he expects westbound I-44 traffic to be blocked until 10 or 10:30 a.m., while accident reconstruction teams take measurements and collect details. Two large tow trucks from Hyndrich Towing in …

I am surprised that the highway patrol did not shut down I-44 (at least temporarily) due to practically no visibility on such a busy interstate. Accidents like this one shouldn't be happening. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/10/fla-patrol-defends-self-wreck-gainesville_n_1765361.html   more ›
