Volunteer REHAB Group 'Rescues' Firefighters

Here's a peek behind the scenes of a special group of volunteers, who wait to care for Eureka Fire Protection District firefighters as they take breaks and after they are done fighting fires.

When Eureka Fire Protection District firefighters are done fighting fires, the work of a dedicated group of volunteers and district personnel just begins. As evidenced during Thursday afternoon's brush fire along Highway OO near the Wildwood/Pacific border, REHAB team members take their roles of reinvigorating, supporting and checking the vital signs of local firefighters very seriously. Local firefighters are supported by a novel group and initiative launched about 16 months ago, said Sheila Frost, the Eureka Fire Protection District inspector who organizes the group. She said they modeled the program after a few others they heard about in other states, and expanded it. "This is something unique to Eureka," Frost said. "Not that many …

Monarch Fire Protection District Union Members Say Campaign Information was Inaccurate and Misleading

Professional Firefighters of Local 2665 Monarch Shop members are upset over campaign materials that allegedly indicate they donated $15,000 to this year's election when they say they did not donate at all. Targeted candidate says he is aghast.

A direct mail piece that firefighters allege was distributed Friday by Monarch Fire Protection board candidate Richard Gans as a "voter alert" initiated a flurry of response by the firefighters' union this weekend. A sample of the piece, provided by a union representative, accompanies this article. The card indicates that Gans' election opponent, Steven Swyers, of Wildwood, hid a $15,000 campaign contribution from the firefighters' union. The card also states it was paid for "by the committee to elect Rick Gans campaign, Mark Rothstein treasurer." Chris Gelven, shop steward of Professional Firefighters of Eastern Missouri IAFF Local 2665 Monarch Shop, said the union had to respond to what they called misleading and inaccurate details …

First Responders Go the Extra Mile, Even in Snow

Extra efforts made by firefighters during recent, rough winter weather happen seamlessly.

Firefighting is a hard enough job.  When snow and ice are added to the task, the job takes a turn for the worse.  However, local firefighters remained determined to battle through the challenges over the past couple of weeks of different winter weather by altering their preparation methods. This month's series of snowstorms had first responders literally 'on their toes' in more ways than one.  Monarch Fire District Assistant Chief Les Crews said it helps to be proactive and not reactive. The Monarch Fire District covers several northwestern portions of Wildwood, which reflects quite a bit of rugged geography. "February's was the first major snowstorm that we, as a department, took an aggressive approach toward. Monarch joined forces with …
