February denotes national Black History Month. Following is a corresponding event schedule for St. Louis County library branches located in Central and West St. Louis County, including Eureka.
The story of Black History Month begins in Chicago during the late summer of 1915, according to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Following is a series of local events at which one can observe the annual observation. Eureka Hills Branch, Eureka Monday, Feb. 4, 6 p.m. African Inspired Jewelry Making Workshop Come make your own African inspired jewelry with Imani Aisha Creations! In this 90-minute workshop, participants will be using the shapes of the Egyptian Ankh and Africa to make a necklace or a brooch. Funds available by the passage of Proposition L allowed the library system managers to extend operating hours.
Operating hours at Eureka Hills Branch Library were extended from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays, starting this month. Branch hours now match the rest of the county library system, operating from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Proposition L, approved by 58 percent of voters on Nov. 6, increased the St. Louis County Library's tax ceiling by 6 cents to 26 cents per $100 valuation. See related article for background: Library-Tax Supporters Contribute $265,000 The increase is slated to fund new branches where they are needed, to repair and remodel other branch buildings, and to enhance services at all 20 county library locations. New library projects will start this year.

Here's a chance to participate in a winter reading clubs: one for kids and one for teens/adults. Hurry—entries are due Dec. 31.
Eureka Hills Branch Library staffers are hosting a reading club and resulting raffle for the participants. For every 15 minutes children read, a circle is marked on an entry card, which can be secured at the library. Kids are asked to read five hours total. Adults and teens are asked to read four books, and to list the titles. Once the card is complete (there are 20 circles), turn it into the library to enter into a raffle for a winter prize pack that includes items such as sleds, hand warmers, gift cards, DVDs, books and Kindles. Holiday Gift Idea: Members of The Eureka Project grassroots group who are raising funds for local library expansions invite others to join the quest.
Looking for a gift for someone who has nearly everything they need? Members of The Eureka Project worked hard behind-the-scenes this year to help get a spotlight on the need for a larger library to service this area. Great strides were made when the vacated Blockbuster building was able to be transformed into a new location. An interesting gift for book worms would be to line up a yearly membership with the Friend of the St. Louis County Foundation. The foundation is a nonprofit organization, and donations are tax-deductible. The goal of the foundation is to help sustain bookmobiles, pre-school reading programs and teen centers, as well as the award-winning author series held at locations such as as the Eureka Hills Branch Library. Fans of the Avengers, Spider-Man and Transformers can pick up special-edition issues starring their favorite superheroes during Free Comic Book Day on May 5. All branches of the St. Louis County Library, including the Eureka Hills Branch at 156 Eureka Towne Center Drive, will have free comics to give away on Saturday. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., residents may visit their local branch and receive one issue per person while supplies last. Free Comic Book Day is an annual celebration of comics. Each May, retailers, publishers, suppliers and distributors make some comics free in an effort to reward comic book veterans and draw in new fans. In observation of Black History Month, a special presentation will be available at the Eureka Hills Branch Library on Feb. 13.
African Dance will be presented at Eureka Hills Branch Library at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 13 for Black History Month. Tiffany Scott and the African American Ensemble will take attendees on a journey through the rich history and traditions of the people of Africa. The audience will experience live drummers and traditional African garments in this program. This event is relevant to all ages.

Following up to re-opening in a new location Dec. 1, 2011, book lovers, county librarians, officials and community leaders christened the Eureka Hills Branch Library for the new year on Tuesday.
Library usage at the Eureka Hills Branch Library increased by 20 percent since the facility re-opened at its new location at 156 Eureka Towne Center in the building formerly used by Blockbuster. A grand opening celebration was held Tuesday. Eureka Mayor Kevin Coffey told grand opening attendees he could remember 30 years ago when Eureka had nothing but book mobiles. "What a change," he said. "Eureka has grown 400 percent in population, and we hope the library continues to grow with us." Coffey said instead of the library being behind in timing of stated wishes of local residents, he believed it was one step ahead by demonstrating innovative technology and other resources that people will need in the future. As of Wednesday, Dec. 1, the Eureka Hills Branch of the St. Louis County Library reopens for business at its new location, 156 Eureka Towne Center.
Once again, there are movies in the former Blockbuster Video store building in Eureka, but this time they are for checking out from the new lessee — the Eureka Hills Branch of the St. Louis County Library. The library staff closed its former location at 103 Hilltop Village Center Dr. during the Thanksgiving holiday and moved into the recently remodeled building at 156 Eureka Towne Center. The new location is one mile west of its former location, in the same complex as the Walmart Supercenter. The new Eureka Hills space is said to be 30 percent larger than the previous location, and features brightly colored walls and comfortable seating.
