High School Annual Missouri/Illinois Baseball Showcase Coming

A weekend devoted each year to area baseball skills, games and clinics will be hosted at Busch Stadium June 18 and sponsored by PNC Banks. Select 50 players include local athletes from Eureka, Wildwood and Pacific.

The third annual PNC Bank High School Baseball Showcase presented by Rawlings on June 18 will provide 50 fortunate high school seniors the chance to demonstrate to NCAA coaches and professional scouts they have what it takes to make it in the big leagues. Among them are local baseball players from Wildwood, Eureka and Pacific—see the 2012 roster that accompanies this article. Matt Hasenbeck, representing Eureka High School, will be one of the pitchers that day. Josh Moore from Pacific High School also will pitch. Will DuPont, representing Lafayette High School, will play as shortstop. With a 1:15 p.m. first pitch at Busch Stadium on June 18, the Baseball Showcase game will feature both Missouri and Illinois high school All-Stars, nominated…

Drury Baseball Player from Eureka Progresses after Skateboarding Accident

Michael Bigogno, a Drury University baseball player from Eureka, still is recovering post-surgery from head trauma received in a skateboarding accident on May 19 in Springfield, MO. Coach Mark Stratton provides updates.

Former Eureka High School baseball player, Michael Bigogno, has been moved to a transitional area in a Springfield, MO, hospital as part of his recovery from head trauma occurring from a skateboard accident last month. He received surgery 24 hours after the incident. David Freese: Joy About Local Ball

When David Freese helped Six Flags St. Louis inaugurate the renovated roller coaster "Mr. Freeze: Reverse Blast" on Thursday, Patch also asked him about lessons learned from baseball at Lafayette High School.

Being happy at what you're doing is key to succeeding, said David Freese, a Lafayette High School graduate turned St. Louis Cardinals MVP World Series baseball player. Freese took part in Six Flags St. Louis' launch of the park's newly renovated ride "Mr. Freeze: Reverse Blast" on Thursday in Eureka. Eureka Legion JV Baseball Team Wins Zone

The JV Legion Baseball Post No. 177 team from Eureka swept another tournament without a loss, in the Zone playoffs. They will head to southern Missouri again for State games.

Players on the Eureka JV Legion Baseball Post No. 177 team stayed 'in the zone' and won Zone playoffs this weekend in Cape Girardeau, MO, going undefeated in a double elimination tournament.  Team players now head to State qualification games, which are scheduled July 21 through 23 in Jackson, MO. SLABA: Youth Baseball Group Thrives

The Meramec Valley Travelers, an area St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association team, use Eureka and Rockwood Summit as its base schools for players.

There was once a time around St. Louis when American Legion baseball was the standard for summer action on the diamond. With the rise of traveling “select” teams over the past decade, Legion baseball has lost some of its luster. Despite these select teams drawing more and more players, often for a hefty fee, one organization that remains as strong as ever is the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association. The Meramec Valley Travelers, an area SLABA team, use Eureka High and Rockwood Summit as its base schools for players, but also get players from Pacific, Valley Park, Washington and Lindbergh. The JV Legion Baseball Post No. 177 team from Eureka is on a roll. They won Districts Saturday night. They are going to Cape Girardeau, MO, later this week to play in Zone playoffs.

Local Baseball Players Named All-Conference

See who at Lafayette High School got the conference's co-Player of the Year award. Five players from Lafayette and four from Eureka got the nod for first-team selections.

Lafayette High and Eureka High finished in the middle of the pack of the highly competitive Suburban West Conference this spring. But the Rockwood schools were well-recognized on the all-conference team, with 10 first-team selections each on the 24-player squad. Lafayette, which finished fourth in the conference, had the co-Player of the Year in Will DuPont. The junior infielder led the Suburban West in four different categories. DuPont led the league in three major departments: batting average (.528); home runs (six) and RBI (35). He was also the league leader in slugging percentage (.876) and was second in both runs scored (41) and stolen bases (25). Eureka Baseball Steamrolls Parkway South To Win Championship

It's been a great week for Eureka- and Wildwood-based athletes. Way to go! And we have a Patch player of the week.

Patch takes a look at the latest news and notes from the Suburban West Conference, including the postseason getting under way. BASEBALL The Eureka baseball team saved its best for last in winning the Class 4 District 4 baseball championship. The Wildcats needed 10 innings to defeat Marquette 7-3 in their opener. They followed with an amazing 16-1 win over top-seeded and conference champion Parkway South in the semifinals. Eureka scored nine runs in the first inning against the Patriots. The championship game and semifinal were both finished in five innings by the 10-run rule. Eureka defeated Lafayette 10-0 in the title game. Two Local Baseball Players Are All Smiles

Two local, high school baseball players are among St. Louis metropolitan players selected as Coaches’ Choice All-St. Louis, All-Stars to assist charity. Tickets for their June 12 game at Busch Stadium are available from high school coaching staffs.

Nick Jacobs from Eureka High School and Drue Bravo from Lafayette High School were selected for the 2011 SmilesLEAGUE Coaches’ Choice All-St. Louis, All-Star High School Baseball Game to be held June 12 at 4 p.m. at Busch Stadium. Representatives of Delta Dental of Missouri and the St. Louis Cardinals gathered Sunday outside of Busch Stadium to announce details of the first SmilesLEAGUE St. Louis Coaches’ Choice All-Star High School Baseball Game. The All-Star lineup includes 32 high school seniors from public schools throughout St. Louis and St. Louis County. They will be coached by former Cardinals players Scott Cooper and Kerry Robinson. Suburban West Roundup: Eureka Baseball Building Momentum

Eureka baseball defeats powerhouse Oakville, 15-5, and has won five of its past seven games.

Our weekly look at the latest news and notes from the Suburban West Conference: Eureka baseball defeated Oakville on Tuesday night, 15-5, and has won five of its past seven games. The Wildcats are now 13-10 and 7-7 in the Suburban West. Eureka will host Northwest (9-14) on Friday at 4:15 p.m. Matt Hasenbeck has been the Wildcats’ most productive hitter throughout this season. He is batting .393 with a team-leading three home runs and 22 runs batted in. Tanner McKay is batting .381 with 17 RBI. Josh Stephens’ 444 batting average leads Eureka.
