National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is Saturday

St. Louis County Police Department officers will join Drug Enforcement Administration officials in collecting and destroying potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs this Saturday.

A fifth annual, national drug take-back day will be held Saturday (Sept. 29) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with St. Louis County Police Department officers again partnering with Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officials to execute this initiative locally. Organizers said the overall goal is to prevent unused prescription medication from becoming available for abuse, and to keep unused prescription medication out of the nation's water supply. Americans participating in DEA’s four previous Take-Back Days turned in nearly 1.6 million pounds—almost 774 tons—of prescription drugs, most recently at almost 5,700 sites operated by nearly 4,300 of the DEA’s local law enforcement partners. DEA’s last event collected more than double the pills as the…

Blevins Fifth Graders D.A.R.E. to Graduate

A total of 87 fifth graders at Blevins Elementary School in Eureka graduated Friday from the nationally acclaimed drug abuse education program. It will be the last class conducted, given Thursday's announcement from the Rockwood School District.

Smiles, tears and hugs intermingled at the graduation ceremony held Friday afternoon at Blevins Elementary School in Eureka for 87 graduates of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program. While it was a day based on achievement of the fifth graders who just completed a 10-week course with D.A.R.E. police officer Jennifer Werges, the announcement that the D.A.R.E. program no longer would be conducted at Rockwood School District elementary schools stunned the parents in attendance. "The D.A.R.E. program is really informational," said Lori Passiglia, whose daughter graduated from the program five years ago and now is a sophomore at Eureka High School. "I was really excited to have my second child participate in the program this …

Teens, sponsors and parents from all of Rockwood School District's high schools met Thursday evening to collaborate. Presentation included skit on the effects of drunk driving.

Teen leaders involved with local peer-to-peer drug prevention programs shared progress and personal observations with approximately 50 attendees Thursday evening at Eureka High School. Several students from across the Rockwood School District, affiliated with the district's STAR (Supporting Teens At Risk) program, put on a skit in the Eureka High School theater. It was part of a larger offering hosted by the district's Drug Free Schools staff and Drug-Free Coalition community members. Thank you for the fabulous coverage of our "Youth Showcase" event! It is so very important to share the message that not ALL kids drink, smoke and use other drugs, and that some area teens are really making a difference in setting "the stage" for healthy behavior.   more ›
