St. Louis area police and school administrators are taking security measures in schools to the next level, even to the point of perhaps conducting training for teachers about how to disarm intruders and negotiate with shooters who invade schools. St. Louis County Police Department officers and members of the Safe Schools Partnership met Thursday morning at the Rockwood School District Administrative Annex in Eureka to continue discussions about how to bolster future safety in schools. Serious crime in areas protected by St. Louis County Police Department officers has decreased in 2012, dropping to its lowest level since 1969. The total population served directly by county police is more than 410,000. Index crime statistics comparing 2012 to 2011 in the municipalities served by county officers, as well as unincorporated St. Louis County, show an overall reduction of 8.7 percent. The county police team stated in a news release the following update: These crime numbers include offenses reported in a community more recently contracted with the county police department last March—the City of Dellwood. Wednesday night, a graduation ceremony was held at the Daar-ul-Islam Mosque located at Weidman and Manchester roads for its first-ever Citizen Police Academy. In the wake of the Newtown, CT school massacre, St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch will visit schools this week to discuss increasing security, including putting guns in elementary schools.
St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch and police officers will begin visiting St. Louis County schools Monday morning, according to KMOV-TV. Fitch said he's received numerous calls from area schools concerned about security since Friday's mass shooting in a Newtown, CT, elementary school. He said officers will step up patrols around all elementary schools in the 12 school districts within their service. Fitch acknowledges most high schools and some middle schools, including those in West St. Louis County, have armed school resource officers. St. Louis County Police Department’s Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force representatives will receive the 2012 “Outstanding Community Prevention Effort Award” in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.
The heroin-deterrent “Not-Even-Once” campaign initiated in the St. Louis metropolitan area by St. Louis County Police Department officers is credited for a 30 percent drop in deaths from the drug since the effort was launched. The campaign's results also were noticed on a larger scale, resulting in the department just receiving a national award in heroin education. The award will be presented Thursday by President Barack Obama’s drug czar, director Gil Kerlikowske of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, in Washington, D.C. REGISTRATION DUE: St. Louis West County Police Precinct officers, in partnership with Islamic Foundation leaders, will host an eight-week series of classes to specifically address safety on behalf of St. Louis' Muslim residents.
Organziers said 39 participants are registered for the first time Citizens' Police Academy to be hosted by St. Louis County Police West County Precinct officers, in partnership with Islamic Foundation members, at the Manchester-based Daar-ul-Islam Mosque, 517 Weidman Rd. The eight classes, available to all mosque members, will be held from 6-8 p.m., beginning Wednesday. Participants will graduate Jan. 16. Wildwood police officer John Hallquist recently was honored at a city council meeting for his commitment to public safety, per a recommendation by the city's Public Safety Board members. Capt. To renew the focus on the safety of all children within St. Louis County, including students in Wildwood and Eureka, St. Louis County Police Department officers are rededicating themselves to a Back-to-School Enforcement Program. Former Wildwood police officer promoted to sergeant.
St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch announced the promotions of Sgt. Dana Fulton to the rank of lieutenant, in addition to detectives Devin Rose and Joanna Jensen to the rank of sergeant, according to a news release from police officer and media representative Rick Eckhard. Lt. Dana Fulton is a 23-year police veteran currently assigned to the Bureau of Computer Services. He has served in the Affton Southwest and Wildwood Precincts, Bureau of Central Police Records, MetroLink Unit and School Services.
