The agency has given a group of fourth-grade students at the Center for Creative Learning the President's Environmental Youth Action Award.
The following information was provided by the Rockwood School District: Students in Kathy Nuetzel’s fourth-grade class have earned the President’s Environmental Youth Action Award by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 7. The award is in recognition of their work to raise awareness of dangers of vehicle idling and their efforts to curb this problem. According to Karl Brooks, Regional Administrator for the EPA, these students have demonstrated awesome initiative and tremendous stewardship skills to minimize vehicle idling. “This project is increasing the public's knowledge about vehicle idling and motivating parents and bus drivers to shut off cars and buses in the school and bus pick-up lines," said Brooks. “Their Action4Air …

After fourth graders at Rockwood School District's Center for Creative Learning (CCL) in October requested the St. Louis County anti-idling ordinance be enforced at all Rockwood locations, the district's Board of Education directors took the recommendation to heart. Rockwood's board of directors apparently agreed, and approved a freshened Rockwood policy to that end at Thursday's board meeting. This Rockwood School District teacher was called "a connected educator who values collaboration and interaction as an important part of education."
Karen Giesler, a third-grade teacher at the Center for Creative Learning (CCL), was named a Peabody Energy Leaders in Education award recipient, according to a Monday news announcement from the Rockwood School District. Giesler is in her 21st year as a gifted education teacher. The CCL program includes students from all four of Rockwood's geographic quandrants. The Peabody Energy Leaders in Education program supports educators who foster the future workforce and prepare students to compete in a global marketplace. James "Jay" Walsh, of Ellisville, died Friday. He was 55 years old. He was a teacher of districtwide gifted education fourth and fifth grade students at Rockwood School District's Center for Creative Learning. CCL parents often worked with him in his role as teacher liaison on the CCL PTO board. He was partner to Larry Christison. A memorial visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester Road at Holloway in Ballwin. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the CCL PTO Jay Walsh Scholarship Fund, 265 Old State Road, Ellisville, MO 63021.

St. Louis County's anti-idling ordinance indicates motorists should not idle for more than 3 minutes. But students at Rockwood School District's Center for Creative Learning (CCL) would like to take this pro-health and anti-pollution measure a step further. A handful of CCL fourth graders presented a proposal for an anti-idling policy at Thursday's Rockwood Board of Education meeting. Along with teacher Kathy Nuetzel, students Danielle Essman, Zak Mitra, Brayden Haas, A.J. Ohley and Rachel Heinzerling explained the health effects and environmental problems associated with this action. There's a theme occurring in a particular curriculum for Rockwood School districtwide students attending the Center for Creative Learning.
Students in Karen Giesler’s class at Rockwood School District's Center for Creative Learning in Ellisville are “getting geared up” as they use gears to create movement and precise speed for robots. The goal for these fourth and fifth-grade students, according to a district news release, is to determine the gear ratios and programming needed to compete in two races: a “snail race” for the slowest robot and a “drag race” for the fastest. With each adjustment, students test their robots down the halls of the school. Giesler stated that students must figure out what adjustments are needed to control the speed of their robots. Six public school educators were announced Thursday as finalists for the 2012-13 Missouri Teacher of the Year—and Rockwood School District is represented by one of them. Nominations for the award were submitted by school districts throughout the state. The finalists are chosen, based on their written application, by a selection committee appointed by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Rockwood School District fifth graders learned from St. Louis' 11 most endangered buildings' list, nominated buildings for the Historic State Register and proposed a reuse plan for the buildings. Visit their results on display in downtown St. Louis.

CCL's student body is comprised of qualified, districtwide students, including the following Eureka and Wildwood elementary schools: Organized in 1958 and incorporated as a non-profit in 1959, Landmarks Association is the primary advocate for the region's built environment. Samantha Anth, former Center for Creative Learning gifted education specialist within the Rockwood School District, will become director of the English Language Learners and Gifted programs for Hazelwood School District next month.
Samantha Anth, former Center for Creative Learning gifted education specialist within the Rockwood School District, was hired by Hazelwood School District Board of Education members as the director of the English Language Learners and Gifted programs, effective July 1. Anth replaces Mara Berry, who is retiring, according to a Hazelwood news release. With eight years of experience in education, Anth served in Rockwood as a gifted education specialist for kindergarten through sixth grades since 2004. She also has experience managing summer school programs and working as an administrative intern. She is an associate faculty member at University of Phoenix, according to the release. Artwork created by third-grade students at the Rockwood School District's Center for Creative Learning in Ellisville will be on display at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Chesterfield through the end of June.
Created as part of the Microscopic Masterpieces class, Rockwood School District third-grade students at the Center for Creative Learning (CCL) in Ellisville worked as authentic scientists and mathematicians to create artwork of enlarged insect parts. They sought accuracy during each stage of the process for the purpose of relaying correct information to their audience, according to Rockwood materials. CCL Teacher Sharon Smith said the students began by researching insects and studying their tiniest parts, according to a Rockwood news release. “What amazed me was the perseverance of these students,” said Smith in the release.
