Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support small businesses that help our community thrive. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. As "Small Business Saturday" on Nov. 24 approaches, should the definition of "small business" go by number of employees, sales volume, assets, net profits or some other element in today's circumstances?
What currently constitutes a small business varies widely around the world. Small businesses were typically privately owned corporations, partnerships or sole proprietorships. However, in today's evolving business world at break-neck paces, more and more people are finding themselves in hybrid work situations that now also could be considered "small business" from some viewpoints. A movement to shop local for the holidays becomes Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26. Wines of Wildwood is a prime example of how to keep the dollars local.
A new day has been added to the holiday calendar, but keep reading! It’s a good one. A year ago, as the U.S. economy was beginning its upturn, small business owners were looking for a way to attract customers, and according to American Express, a supporter of the new holiday, 93 percent of consumers like to support local businesses. Thus was born Small Business Saturday. “Small businesses are really the lifeblood of the economy,” said Mary Ann Fitzmaurice Reilly, senior vice president, customer marketing for American Express.
