MVP Player Determined to Keep Improving

Eureka High School basketball junior center Alex Hillyer, the Suburban West Conference MVP, will attract much attention heading into next season.

There was a time not so long ago when Alex Hillyer detested anything to do with basketball. In seventh grade, her father Vince insisted that Hillyer practice her shooting and dribbling skills every single day. "I used to cry," the Eureka High junior said with a giggle. "I really hated it. I just didn't want to do it." Vince, a successful high school player in the Denver area, remembers those days fondly. "I told her when she said that she wanted to play basketball that she could do it, but she would have to do it the right way and work hard to become the best player she could be," he said. "For a while, she just didn't want to do that." Fast forward five years. Now, the girl who cried when told to work on her game, can't imagine life …

Lafayette's Hipp Leads Lancers to District Championship

Lafayette junior guard Ashley Hipp scores a game-high 17 points to lift the Lancers to a 51-36 home win over Eureka in the district title game.

Some surprises came out of the Class 5 District 4 girls final on Friday night, and they added up to a 51-36 home win for Lafayette High School over Eureka High School. The best surprise, for the Lafayette fans, was junior guard Ashley Hipp’s shooting. Hipp scored a game-high 17 points despite averaging just 7.1 per game this season. It was Hipp’s 11 second-quarter points, which included three 3-pointers, that rocked the Lancers. The Wildcats raced to a 32-13 halftime lead. Hipp deflected attention, though, following the big victory. “It’s all my teammates, too. I don’t take credit at all for my shots,” she said. Hipp credited junior guard Jordynn Martin for passing her the ball “multiple times, and I thank her for those shots.” Lafayette …

Eureka Girls Win Crucial League Clash

Eureka beats Lindbergh, 75-60, in a key Suburban West Conference girls basketball game. Each team entered the matchup undefeated in league play.

The  Eureka and Lindbergh varsity girls basketball teams battled on Tuesday night at Eureka High School for what will probably be the deciding game for the Suburban West Conference championship. Each team entered this matchup undefeated. Eureka took the lead early and never looked back in a 75-60 win. The win gives the Wildcats a 6-0 conference record while Lindbergh (14-6) falls to 3-1 in conference play. Six-foot-3 junior center Alex Hillyer led all scorers with 27 points, and added 10 rebounds for the Wildcats. Her eight points in the first period led Eureka (15-5) to a 16-6 lead. Senior guard Melissa Menchella added four points in the quarter, and had 16 for the game. Hillyer scored eight points in the second period, and added eight in…

Basketball Player's Hard Work Puts Her in Spotlight

Eureka High School junior Alex Hillyer led the Wildcats to the district basketball finals the past two years. She averages 19.4 points a game and is one of the best players in the area.

Six-foot, three-inch Eureka High School junior basketball player Alex Hillyer picked the right time in life for a growth spurt. She has been playing basketball since she was 5 or 6 years old, and Hillyer said she was “very little and very skinny.” In the summer before her freshman year at Eureka, Hillyer grew six inches. She immediately started on the varsity basketball team, playing post for the first time, and has been a force in the paint for the Wildcats ever since. Hillyer is now one of the top scorers in the entire St. Louis metro area. “Alex is pretty much the focal point of our team, especially on offense,” Eureka girls coach James Alsup said. “We want to get her the ball as much as possible, whether she catches it and scores it, …

Eureka Girls' Wildcats Claim Lindbergh Basketball Tourney Title

Eureka junior center Alex Hillyer's 22 points leads the Wildcats past Marquette, 55-46, in the championship game of the Lindbergh Girls Tournament.

Eureka junior center Alex Hillyer was outstanding as usual on Friday night. But it took a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers from senior Jamie Miller and freshman Torie Allen to propel the top-seeded Wildcats past Marquette, 55-46, in the championship game of the Lindbergh Girls Tournament. "I've been trying to tell people we've got some real good outside shooters on this team," said the 6-foot-3 Hillyer, who had 22 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots. "Maybe now they will believe me." The win was the fourth in the past five games for the Wildcats, who improved to 13-5 overall. Third-seeded Marquette fell to 12-7. Hillyer has had contact with more than 100 NCAA Division I schools. She draws even more attention from the Wildcats' …

On-Fire Eureka Girls' Basketball Team Keeps Rolling

The Eureka High School Wildcats defeat University City, 62-27, in the Lindbergh Girls Basketball Tournament Monday night.

The red-hot Eureka High School Wildcats varsity girls' basketball team met the struggling University City Lions in the Lindbergh Girls Basketball Tournament on Monday night, and with predictable results. In the first round of the tournament, top-seeded Eureka toppled eight-seed University City, 62-27. After a slow first quarter for the Wildcats, they flattened the Lions the rest of the way to improve to 11-5 this season. Eureka tops the Suburban West Conference at 4-0. U. City is 0-2 in the Suburban South Conference and 2-11 overall. “I was impressed and I was proud of what they were doing in the first half,” University City coach Janice Tompkins said. Her team knew they’d have to battle Eureka star Alex Hillyer down in the paint to have a…

What Happens When the Top Two Girls' Basketball Defensive Teams Go at Each Other?

Eureka High School Girls' Varsity defeats Northwest, 54-39, in a Suburban West Conference matchup. The Wildcats’ 4-0 mark has them atop the league.

The matchup between the Eureka and Northwest high schools' varsity girls teams pitted the top two defensive teams in the Suburban West Conference. Both Eureka and Northwest came into Wednesday’s game allowing less than 42 points per game. As might be expected with two teams built on defense, this game was a slow-paced battle. Eureka pulled away to win at Northwest, 54-39, and improved to 10-4. The Wildcats’ 4-0 conference mark has them atop the Suburban West. Northwest (11-6, 1-1) came out of the gate strong and ran out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter. It was clear that the girls from Northwest were bothered by Eureka’s size in the post, particularly 6-foot-3 junior Alex Hillyer, whose size was especially apparent on the defensive end…

Eureka Girls Fall Short Despite Hillyer's Big Night

In a Tuesday basketball game that features a back-and-forth duel between Eureka's Alex Hillyer and Webster Groves' Jordan Thompson, it is Webster that wins, 56-53.

Eureka High School girls varsity standout player Alex Hillyer, the Wildcats’ 6-foot-3 center, certainly commanded the attention of the Webster Groves Statesmen prior to their rivalry game on Tuesday night. Webster Groves head coach Patti Perkins said before their home game that any chance her team had to win focused on slowing Hillyer. However, Hillyer had a huge game with a season-high 30 points, but the Statesmen, with determination and mental toughness in the last minute, still pulled out a 56-53 win. The game featured a back-and-forth duel between Hillyer, and Webster Groves junior guard Jordan Thomson, who had a team-high 20 points. “They would make a run, we would make a run,” Eureka (9-4) head coach James Alsup said.  “Jordan …

Eureka Girls Basketball Team Fends Off Oakville

The Wildcats win their Suburban West Conference matchup at home on Friday over Oakville, 47-41, bringing Eureka's in-conference record to 3-0.

Behind its clutch free-throw shooting, the Eureka High School Wildcats girls' basketball team hung on to beat Oakville, 47-41, on Friday night to improve to 7-2, including 3-0 in the Suburban West Conference. Oakville coach Aaron Bosch said two words after his team’s league opener that summed everything up, “free throws.” After not shooting any foul shots during the first half, the Eureka Wildcats made nine in the last few minutes of the game, ultimately giving them a 47-41 win over the Tigers. In the first quarter, things looked promising for Oakville (5-8). Junior Lauren Fussell made an early steal and layup, followed closely by another steal from senior Allison O’Brien. Senior Audra Plassmeyer had two consecutive rebounds and then a 3-…
