A California mother, who battled Enterprise Rent-A-Car after her two daughters died in an accident allegedly caused by a known defective car they were rented, just launched a petition. Have you had any concerns about rental vehicles in this way locally?
Nearly 80,000 consumers quickly joined a grieving mother’s just-launched Change.org campaign requesting Enterprise Rent-A-Car to stop opposing proposed legislation that would prohibit rental car companies from renting cars recalled due to safety risks. However, Enterprise Holdings' representatives said that with almost 50 million vehicle rental transactions every year, customer safety is a top priority. Enterprise Rent-A-Car has an office at 410 W. 4th St. in Eureka. A receptionist at the office said there had not been any inquiries about this matter locally. The social action campaign focused on Enterprise was initiated this week by Cally Houck, a mother whose two daughters were killed in an accident when they drove a recalled car rented …

Letter to the Editor: The turning point, every game has one. This April 3 is your momentum changer!
There is a danger in weak passions; one may mistake the absence of any spectacular sin for virtue; one may seem to oneself to be a good enough sort, only because one happens to be temperamentally incapable of doing anything bad enough. – unknown Apathy didn’t just start over night. For generations now, we have turned control of our lives over to the power hungry few. 311,000,000 Americans are ruled by 545. – Andy Andrews We may not be able to change the decision made in Washington, but we can change what is directly in front of us and in our own backyards: The Rockwood Board of Education. The April 3 Rockwood School District election is about the future of our district. Since last June, Rockwood Stakeholders have been reading about the …

A Patch reader since loaded a photo of "BatDog," who also attended the event. For a look at the contest's winners, judges and Mayor Kevin Coffey and his dog, click here for a Patch article …
House Majority Floor Leader Tim Jones, (R-Eureka), 89th District, said he believes it would be better to wait until after this year's elections to make another run at a new ethics bill for Missouri.
Missouri House Majority Floor Leader Tim Jones, (R-Eureka), 89th District, recommends waiting until after this year's elections before trying to pass new ethics legislation. On Monday, Jones said postponing a new attempt could produce a higher-quality ethics bill, according to an Associated Press article published in the Belleville News Democrat. Jones told Patch the subject was raised during the weekly Monday press conference in the Speaker’s Office, so he addressed it. After Missouri's Supreme Court last week threw out much of the state's most recent ethics law due to how it was approved, Gov. Jay Nixon called for new ethics legislation. The law was struck down on procedural grounds because the ethics provisions were included in an …

Some meteorologists cite a very strong jet stream, caused by La Niña conditions, as key to why fierce tornadoes last year ravaged U.S. cities, such as Joplin, MO. Inadequate shelter areas pose new question. 2012 tornadoes expected to be high count again.
AccuWeather.com reports 2011 went down in the record books as the fourth deadliest tornado year ever in the United States, with 550 fatalities. The year 1925 was the deadliest one in the United States, with 794 killed, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That year is infamous for the Tri-State tornado—the longest-tracking, deadliest tornado on record. The tornado's path went through portions of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, stretching more than 219 miles long. The twister killed 695 people along its path. There were 552 deaths in 1936, and 551 deaths in 1917, ranking as the second and third most deaths caused by tornadoes in a year. According to the Storm Prediction Center, the yearly average for tornado deaths …
