Scouts Scout Out City Meeting

About 20 scouts and leaders from Boy Scout Troop 322 attended Tuesday night's board of aldermen meeting in Eureka, just to see community citizenship in progress.

Back row seats at Tuesday evening's Eureka board of aldermen meeting were completely filled with people in uniforms. More than 20 Boy Scouts and their leaders attended the meeting to fulfill requirements for their citizenship in community badge.

Scout Zack Hawkins led the pledge of allegiance to start the meeting.

Troop 322 is chartered by the Eureka United Methodist Church.

The troop's scout master, Robert Gyori, addressed Mayor Kevin Coffey, board of aldermen and Chief Michael Wiegand during the guest period of the meeting. He indicated how much troop members appreciated city-related cooperation for scout matters, as well as emergency safety training from police officers.

After witnessing the meeting, scouts and their leaders reconvened on the grass outside city hall to discuss what they had observed and learned. Interestingly, much of their discussion was about the subject of bankruptcy, due to the public hearing held prior to the meeting regarding the Five Year Review of the Interstate 44 Redevelopment project.

Like the residents of Ashton Woods subdivision, several of the scouts said they wondered why homeowners were being asked to pay money (assessments) for buildings that were not being built.

Troop members also began to organize themselves around the upcoming community event to be held in Eureka July 23.
