New Eureka Library Is Subject Of Meeting

Anyone interested in furthering plans for a new library in Eureka can attend a meeting this afternoon at the Holiday Inn-Six Flags in Eureka at 4 p.m.

Editor's Note at 3:03 p.m.:  The following meeting was canceled after one of the branches of the St. Louis County Library was flooded due to today's storm.

Friends of The Eureka (Library) Project and St. Louis County Library representatives will meet this afternoon at 4 p.m. at the in Eureka, 4901 Allenton Rd.

"This is a public meeting and a good opportunity to learn more about the future direction of the Eureka branch," said Carolyn Parmer, chair of The Eureka Project Committee.

The meeting will be held in the Missouri Room.

The gathering also will host this month's board meeting of the St. Louis County Library.

A grassroots effort to establish a new library was initiated by members of The Wednesday Club in Eureka, after they surveyed attendees of the 2010 Eureka Days regarding what residents would most want in the community.

Parmer said the current library location is heavily used by people of all ages, but lacks certain functionality due to limited space. She said the vision is to establish a new location with an expanded children's area, a gathering place for teenagers, and a comprehensive adult collection.

I am very much in favor of a new and larger library. I would have come to the meeting but did not know about it until after it was over. Next time, please put out a notice ahead of time so we can mark it on our calendars.

Judy, today's meeting actually got canceled -- per our other Patch updates -- so you may have another chance to attend the rescheduled one, assuming the county decides to meet in Eureka again. Also, please check our Patch calendar of events (within its own section of the site) frequently for events such as this. Thanks.

The storms yesterday knocked out power and forced the closing of headquarters and other branches of the St. Louis County Library. The Board then decided to cancel the meeting. We hope for it to be scheduled in the near future, as it is an opportunity for all in Eureka to learn more about the library and its future. We'll be passing any information on through Patch.
