Cancer Survivor Tackles Harvest Moon Walk-Run

Gary Borror didn't let a challenging thing, such as walking, stop him from participating in the Harvest Moon Walk and 5K Night Run in Eureka Saturday.

Just six months ago, Gary Borror of Eureka was diagnosed with spinal cancer. Although paralyzed from the neck down for a while following the discovery, Saturday evening he walked the course for the hosted by the and The Eureka Project volunteers to raise funds for the future, new library in Eureka.

Borror is no stranger to long distance running; he has been competing in races for the past 10 years. Two years ago, he earned the gold medal for his age group in Eureka.

As a ranked Senior Olympian runner, he said he qualified to run a 5K run in Houston, TX, but the cancer situation came on really fast and prevented him from doing so. "At first they thought it was a bulging disc."

Borror was determined to fight back, even though he said his nerve endings were "burnt out when the cancer was radiated." He said more motor control slowly has returned. Recently, he celebrated with his wife, Kathy, because he could kick his foot by himself.

During the race, Kathy followed Gary closely behind with a wheel chair and a beaming smile.
