Session 2013 – Capitol Report XI

As we return from Spring Break, the Missouri House is moving forward on important proposals to spur economic development, reform our energy policy, and strengthen Missouri's education system.

"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote."

-Benjamin Franklin

This week marked our annual legislative Spring Break – a time legislators use to meet and share the news of the first half of Session with constituents, attend local events, and, most importantly, spend much needed time with family, friends, and colleagues.

In this week’s Capitol Report, I discuss the Missouri House’s “Triple E” agenda, which I have championed as our cause this legislative session. With a heightened focus on economic development for job creation, crafting a strong energy policy for a more energy independent Missouri, and education, both in funding and reform, your Missouri House Republicans are honing in on what matters to you when you gather around the dinner table. Our vision of a better Missouri is one in which you have opportunity – opportunity as a result of a strong, efficient economy and an exceptional education. My “Triple E” agenda points Missouri in that direction and your Republican-led legislature is moving us towards it.

Economic Development

My vision of economic development is one in which tax, litigation and labor reform, in tandem with smart incentives, exist to drive new growth. We have set out to cut incentives that need to go, cap others to bring certainty to our budget, and create innovative new incentives to further prime Missouri’s economic engine. Energy

The costs of energy play a major role in whether or not Missouri businesses can compete in the global economy. Costs also impact your ability to invest in your own future. Click here to read more on what your Republican-led legislature has proposed.

Education

It is said that the key to prosperity is a quality education for our children. I agree, and we have already begun to focus on several initiatives to help parents make informed decisions, prioritize student achievement, and invest wisely for our students of tomorrow. This Week’s Vlog

With the legislative spring break upon us, Senate President Pro Tem Tom Dempsey and I held a historic joint press conference to highlight the various proposals our two chambers have been debating and successfully moving through the General Assembly. Click here to view the press conference.
