Spring Clean Your Garage

The garage is the most dreaded organizing job for many people, but it doesn't have to be. Just like any other space, it is a matter of setting up zones, breaking it down into bite-sized pieces and letting go of some things.

Your garage is one of the first things you see when you come home every day, and it can strongly affect your mood. A couple of years ago, I painted my garage a cheerful yellow, and I feel so good when I pull into my garage each day!

Here are a couple of tips to get you started on your garage.

1. Paint the walls in your garage. Most garages are painted with flat white paint and look so dirty and dingy. Using a warm or cheerful color and a semi-gloss finish can make it come alive. The semi-gloss holds up much better than flat paint, and can be sprayed down with the hose for cleaning.
2. Next, install a pegboard for the tools you use the most. Pegboards are inexpensive and relatively easy to hang. For a really nice effect, you might even consider painting the boards a complementary color to the walls. Using various pegboard hooks, arrange your tools on the pegboard, keeping like tools near one another and your most used tools down low.
3. Now for the final step: Use a sharpie marker to outline each tool on the pegboard. Having the outlines make it very simple to return each tool as well as knowing if any have been left out or are missing.
