Fireworks Stand Near Eureka Chosen for KSDK-TV Update Broadcast

When KSDK-TV broadcaster Elizabeth Matthews wanted an example of how Fourth of July revelers are combining fireworks with the extra safety precautions needed due to this year's extremely dry conditions, she headed to the fireworks stand that has been a steady Fourth of July fixture in the community for many years.

Fireworks City stand manager Mary Corbett told Matthews her buyers have been serious, respectful and responsible regarding how to still have some fun with fireworks but not cause undue risks. Some of the people interviewed for the segment said they deliberately were purchasing items that do not shoot into the sky this year, such as smoke bombs and sparklers.

Corbett offered several common-sense tips for those enjoying fireworks under these fire danger warning conditions:

1. Never shoot fireworks where there is not a water supply accessible.
2. Have a hose already ready before setting off fireworks.
3. Have a bucket of water on standby right next to where fireworks are being used.

spokesperson Scott Barthelmass also was interviewed for the segment. He said in his 20 years of firefighting, he has never seen Fourth of July conditions as dry as this year's situation.

Editor's Note:  2012 Eureka city fireworks were canceled, due to fire dangers, however remember that all the other planned festivities at will go on tonight, including live music.
