New Fall Camps focus on African painted dogs

The Endangered Wolf Center in Eureka has added Fall Wolf Camps to its lineup of children's camps.
For many years, the Center offered Summer Camps. For two years now, the Center has had Winter Camps. This year, the Endangered Wolf Center added Spring Camps.
And now, the Center is registering campers for its first-ever Fall Wolf Camps. The first is Saturday, Oct. 16, and the second will be Saturday, Oct. 23. Each camp is limited to 40 people.
Both camps will focus on African painted dogs, one of five species of endangered canids that live at the Center. (The others are Mexican gray wolves, red wolves, maned wolves and swift foxes.)
African painted dogs once roamed throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Today, conservationists estimate, only 3,000 to 5,000 painted dogs remain in the wild. They are extremely social creatures, and visitors to the Endangered Wolf Center often see the three males -- Datoga, Dogo and Tsavo -- and the lone female -- Dillon -- playing or greeting one another.
Fall Wolf Camps are for children ages 6 to 15. Campers will be divided into three ages groups: 6 to 8, 9 to 12, 13 to 15. Each camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You can also register by calling Education Coordinator Ashley Rearden or Education Assistant Karen Nichols at 636-938-5900.
