Lafayette Showed Eureka in Highway 109 Showdown

The annual rivalry game was exciting, and fans were creative about showing spirit and support of their football players. But only one school could walk away with the 2011 bragging rights.

The Lafayette High Lancers opened their 2011 season with a 35-28 victory over rival Eureka High Wildcats at home in front of a very enthusiastic opening-night crowd, eager to see their Lancers hold off their main nemesis.

The standout performer for was quarterback Dominic Bisesi, who completed 21-of-34 passes for 355 yards. But junior Deonte Robinson was close behind. Not only did Robinson run for a 7-yard touchdown in the first quarter, but he opened the second half in electrifying fashion.

Robinson fielded the kickoff and raced past Eureka for a 94-yard TD return.

senior running back Spencer Stein started his season in fine form for the Wildcats. Stein scored three TDs, with his last one coming on a 24-yard run that pulled Eureka to within 35-28 with just under five minutes remaining.

The Lancers managed to hold off the Wildcats the rest of the way, and the Lafayette faithful headed out very pleased while Eureka was left frustrated. The four-year rivalry now stands tied at 2.
