Field Goal Lifts Lafayette to Overtime Win Over Lindbergh

A 27-yard boot from junior placekicker Daniel Menees proved to be game-winner, but only after Lindbergh's Jordan Harmon came up short on a 42-yarder that could've forced a second overtime in a great football game. This article includes scoring summaries.

When Lafayette head coach Boyd Manne called for his field-goal team to take the field on the first possession of overtime on Friday night at Flyers Field, every member of the unit raced out to his position.

The kick would, hopefully for the , give them the lead against Suburban West Conference rival Lindbergh.

Every member of the team that is, except junior kicker Daniel Menees, who was still taking warmup kicks into a practice net.

“I was just so focused on getting my steps right and hitting the ball good, I didn’t hear anybody say 'get out there',” Menees said. “Then all of a sudden, everybody was yelling for me to go. So I did.”

As it turned out, those extra kicks did the trick, as Menees confidently blasted home a 27-yard field goal that gave the Lancers the edge needed in what proved to be a 24-21 win over the Flyers.

“I had full confidence in him,” Manne said. “He’s got a strong leg, and he’s pretty accurate in practice. So I knew he’d come through for us.”

And although Menees’ boot gave Lafayette the lead, MSHSAA overtime rules meant that Lindbergh also would get a chance to score, and if the Flyers could somehow manage a touchdown they would be declared Friday’s winner.

Instead though, the Lancers defense forced three incompletions by Lindbergh quarterback Peter Simpson, which meant the Flyers had no choice but to try a field goal of their own, which if successful, would’ve forced a second overtime.

Unfortunately for the home team, junior Jordan Harmon’s kick didn’t have enough on it to reach the 42-yard distance he needed, allowing Lafayette to claim a thrilling early-season victory.

“That was a great game,” Manne said. “Our defense really stepped up and did a great job. On offense, we had some opportunistic plays. And I can’t say enough about the effort from our kids.”

Leading the way for Lafayette was junior running back Deonte Robinson, who had a game-high 104 rushing yards and scored a critical touchdown with just under four minutes left in regulation. Along with Menees’ third successful PAT of the night, that tied the score at 21.

Lindbergh, which had trailed 7-0 and 14-7, tied the score both times, and then took its first lead early in the fourth quarter when Simpson found fellow senior Blake Beauchamp for a 30-yard scoring strike.

Harmon made the PAT to give the Flyers a 21-14 lead with 9:05 left in the game.

“We had opportunities to put it away,” Lindbergh head coach Tom Beauchamp said. “Then we kind of did some silly stuff, and that’s just how it goes sometimes. I’m not upset with my kids at all. They played hard. I’m just upset that we didn’t get that win.”

Despite the loss, Simpson had another big day passing for the Flyers. He threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns, often hitting his favorite receiver sophomore Garrett Krueger, who finished with 101 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Lafayette is 2-0, and will look to improve to 3-0 next week when it hosts Mehlville on Friday at 7 p.m.

Lindbergh, which fell to 1-1, will be on the road next week. The Flyers will travel to Arnold to take on Fox at 7 p.m.
