Eureka Volleyball Families Hit It Off

Saturday, the Eureka High School volleyball coaches, players and their families hosted a picnic and organizational meeting at Berry Park in Eureka.

Eureka High School volleyball coaches focus on three Cs. Excelling on the court, in class and in our community are pivotal to being in the Eureka volleyball program, head coach Becky Stevenson told players and their families on Saturday at Berry Park in Eureka.

"Two important elements of our volleyball program are integrity and character," said Stevenson. "In fact, we look at volleyball as a tool to teach about character."

Stevenson and the three other coaches welcomed all players, and took care of the necessary paperwork at the picnic gathering.

Stevenson, who teaches language arts at Eureka, has been the head volleyball coach for the past 11 or 12 years. Joining her to direct varsity team members is coach Mary Wisdom, who has been a math teacher at Eureka for the past 11 years. She has been a teacher for 26 years.

"Girls will love the experience they will have with the volleyball program," said Wisdom.

Coaching the junior varsity players will be Deb Title, who also is a language arts teacher at Eureka. It's her second year on the volleyball coaching team there.

As a former volleyball player at and as a Eureka High graduate, Title said she is really proud to be back at the school to work with volleyball players.

It's the first year for Sarah Wengler Poole as coach of the freshman volleyball team. She played on Pacific's High School's state volleyball team, and then played the sport in college. She now is a social worker at Pacific-based senior care facility.

Stevenson encouraged those at the meeting to focus on giving 110 percent effort, academically, socially and athletically. "Our sport and our program is about reinforcing positive values, so our players are good citizens," she said.

"Remember, school comes first," Stevenson reminded the athletes.
