Winter Orchestra Concert at Eureka High School Provided Holiday and Pirate Spirit
Thursday night's 'Music In Our Schools' event included eighth-grade orchestra students as well. Check out the accompanying video to hear an excerpt of one of the blended performances.
A standing-room-only audience greeted orchestra students last night as they performed their winter concert. As a 'Music In Our Schools' event, the concert also incorporated eighth-grade orchestra students from School.
Concert director and Eureka High orchestra teacher Patti Fleer, along with sectional coaches Karen Person, Michael Blackwood and Stephen Larmore, led three groups of orchestra students through a variety of traditional as well as peppy pieces.
Chamber orchestra students first performed a suspenseful sounding "Winter from Four Seasons." They then took the audience through imagining trolls through "In the Hall of the Mountain King," including quite a bit of pizzicato (plucking). Their last song was "Mother Ginger from the Nutcracker Suite," which was a French folklore melody that was a perfect holiday tune.

Concert orchestra students started with "Neapolitan Song," which was a conservatory training piece originally written for piano. The Hungarian-oriented "Three Slavonic Dances" next had a powerful, memorable start. It was different to hear a familiar holiday song, "Jingle Bell Hoedown," done with strings. They ended with a favorite "Wizards in Winter," which combined progressive and heavy metal rock elements with classic touches.
Symphonic orchestra students, also hosting the eighth graders, did "Concerto Grosso Op. 6, No. 1 Allegro." Together they performed a beautiful rendition of "Pirates of the Caribbean," complete with wearing pirate hats. The high school orchestra students then solely performed "American Sketches," an energetic, rhythmic piece. The last song of the night, "Fiddle Like the Dickens," highlighted both high- and low-stringed instruments.

"It was wonderful to have all the students here performing together," said Fleer. "They played their best, and it was a great way to kick off the holiday season."
Fleer said Eureka High orchestra students were selected from among other interested orchestra groups within the state to perform at the 2011 Missouri Music Educators Association's annual conference on Jan. 28 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, MO. The conference includes orchestras, bands and choirs.
She said the Eureka orchestra's next local concert at the school will be Jan. 23, 2011, at 2:30 p.m., in preparation of their performance at the association's meeting.
