Whiz Kid: Eureka High's Missouri Scholar 100

Earning this designation is called an "academic decathlon."

To qualify for the Missouri Scholars 100 program has been compared to meeting the criteria of an "academic decathlon." Well, then Brody Weinrich, a senior at Eureka High has earned that designation, as he was selected as a candidate for the program, representing the school.

Weinrich was honored Thursday evening at the Rockwood Board of Education Awards Ceremony held at Crestview Middle School in Ellisville.

The Missouri Scholars 100 program is sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals.  Schools across Missouri are invited each year to nominate candidates for this statewide recognition.

Principal Jim Wipke said the selection is based primarily on a formula using the student's grade point average and ACT or SAT score.  He said each student nominated had to first qualify for 10 "events" designed to assure the academic strength of the student.

To meet the decathlon requirements, scholar students must have a minimum GPA of 3.750, a minimum ACT score of 29 or a minimum SAT score of 1,900, be ranked in the upper 10 percent of the class, and have taken upper level courses in mathematics, science, English, and foreign language.  Scholar students also must have excellent attendance, be an exemplary school citizen, and be involved in school activity programs, Wipke said at the ceremony.

All nominated students were recognized at a luncheon during the Missouri Scholars 100 Program at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, MO, on Sunday.

Editor's Note:  Lafayette High School also had two Missouri Scholar 100 nominees—Sarah Hereford and Kelly Lamarche—but they were unable to attend the Rockwood awards ceremony due to prior school-related commitments.
