Which Wildwood Middle Teacher is Rockwood's Middle School Teacher of the Year?

This Wildwood Middle School teacher has taught academic stretch for the past 13 years.

Karen Schulz was named the 2013 Middle School Teacher of the Year for the Rockwood School District. For the last 13 years, she has taught Academic Stretch at Wildwood Middle School.

She has taught in Rockwood since 1984 as both a math teacher and a gifted education teacher, according to district sources.

Schulz said in a district announcement she always wanted to be a teacher. “It never occurred to me that I might do something else; I simply believe I was born to teach."

Schulz holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary and middle school math from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She also holds both a master’s degree in teaching and gifted education certification from Webster University.

“My greatest contribution in education doesn’t have to do with teaching math or gifted classes, but rather it concerns helping students become kids of character," said Schulz.

“Knowing that I have made a positive impact on a child is why I continue to teach.”    

On May 5, Schulz will be honored as the Middle School Teacher of the Year.
