Students at Eureka's Individualized Learning Center Earn High School Diplomas

This alternative education program assists young adults who struggle with finishing high school.

High school diplomas were awarded to eight students from the  in the Rockwood School District on Dec. 17.  The students were honored during a completion ceremony attended by family, friends, teachers and administrators.     

"The Individualized Learning Center is committed to providing alternative learning opportunities for students who aspire to enrich themselves through academic success and character development," said Principal Michael Hylen. 

"The students recognized demonstrated perseverance and diligence as they met the Rockwood expectations for graduation.  We are excited to celebrate this important academic milestone with them."

The center provides Rockwood students an opportunity to succeed in a non-traditional high school setting.  Since its inception in 1997, the school has helped more than 200 students complete the requirements needed to obtain a high school diploma.

Based on application and recommendations from teachers, students of this school are typically those who are credit-deficient or already have dropped out of school. The school also is designed for capable but underachieving students, and those who have overwhelming challenges in a traditional school settings. Students at the center may also be experiencing the type of personal problems that make concentrating on academics extremely difficult. Some of the center's students are parents themselves. Others may have handicaps that impede their academic progress. 

The center was designed specifically to meet the needs of at-risk students from 's other four high schools.
