Sept. 11 Highlighted by Area Schools
Local schools did a variety of things to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorism attacks that occurred in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001. Many of today's students were just infants, babies or unborn.
- : On Thursday afternoon, students teachers, and staff created a cross on the lawn outside of the school in Eureka and facing toward Interstate 44 out of 'pinwheels for peace' they each custom designed. A full feature about their project and what drivers are seeing there will be published on Eureka-Wildwood Patch.
- : A schoolwide assembly taught students and visitors about the true meaning of Patriot Day. During the night before, a full soccer field on campus was lined by parents with 2,977 American flags—one for each person who was killed that day. Students and staff participated in a 'reflection walk' around the track located in a circle next to the soccer field to honor the victims of Sept. 11. - : For the past week leading up to the Sept. 11 anniversary, students made peace chains and other gifts for the , which were delivered by teachers each day. During a special ceremony at the school Friday morning, members of the fire department displayed the American flag from the high ladder of the fire truck. - : The eighth grade orchestra performed a mini-concert for students and staff in memory of the victims of 9/11, and in honor of National Anthem Day. The performance also included a short lesson on the lyrics of the National Anthem.
- : Students broadcasted a commemorative message to classrooms on Friday morning. The video was created by a Student Council committee and the voice-over done by a language arts teacher there. In addition, ribbons with the names of 9/11 victims were distributed to help students remember the lives that were lost. For an article about this project,
- : Students reflected on the event by interviewing staff members. They asked teachers questions such as, “How did 9/11 affect your sense of patriotism?” and “Where were you when the attacks happened?"
- : Students and staff gathered at the football stadium for a ceremony to remember Sept. 11. Members of Junior ROTC presented the colors, and raised and lowered the American Flag while taps was played on the trumpet and a snare drum accompanied through two Lafayette students.
