Rockwood Superintendent Issues Reassurances About Returning to School

Rockwood School District parents received the following email on Sunday evening, in the aftermath of Friday's Connecticut shooting rampage. Are your children returning to school tomorrow?

Dear Rockwood Parents:

These last few days have been extremely difficult as we’ve learned more about the tragic incident in Connecticut. I share the overwhelming sadness that I’ve been hearing from our school community as we mourn the tremendous loss of these children and educators. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with these families.

I understand that Monday may be challenging for our Rockwood students and families. I want you to know that we are prepared to support and care for your children when they return to school tomorrow. Our focus will remain on maintaining our students’ learning environment and providing consistency for them in their school routines.

Our staff members will be watchful of our students and listen to their concerns. If students need to speak to someone, our guidance counselors and administrators are ready to respond. We want our students to feel safe at school, and we will reassure them that they are in a place where people care and will do everything they can to protect them.

As Superintendent, I want all parents to know that we will continue to review our crisis plans and procedures to ensure we are doing everything we can to keep our schools safe. We will continue our open and frequent communication with law enforcement agencies, and do all we can to remain vigilant for the safety of students.

As we move forward, I am thankful to be a part of the Rockwood school community. We are connected in our firm belief that schools are safe havens that nurture and support our Rockwood students. Please check the Rockwood website as we will update our resources for parents on this difficult issue. If you have any questions or concerns, you are always welcome to contact your school principal or any central services administrator.

Sincerely,
Bruce Borchers, Ph.D.
Rockwood Superintendent
