Artwork created by fifth-grade students at Center for Creative Learning (CCL) is on display at the Landmarks Association of St. Louis gallery this summer.
CCL's student body is comprised of qualified, districtwide students, including the following and elementary schools:
Organized in 1958 and incorporated as a non-profit in 1959, Landmarks Association is the primary advocate for the region's built environment. Rockwood students' work can be seen at Landmarks' location at 911 Washington, Suite 170, in St. Louis.
Students created the artwork in Melissa Hill’s architecture class. Using Landmarks’ list of endangered buildings as a menu to select from, students explained what would be lost if the buildings were torn down and how community and economic needs could be met by reusing existing buildings. Students also researched the history of their chosen building and communicated their ideas with local experts, government officials and preservationists.
“The overarching goal of this project was for students to implement creative problem-solving and group work skills while impacting their community,” said Hill in a Rockwood announcement about the project. “Several local sustainability experts visited our class to introduce foundational sustainable building practices. Then, to observe these concepts in action, students visited new sustainable buildings around St. Louis."
These projects reflect approximately 18 hours of class work, aside from the field trips and guest speakers, according to Rockwood's information about the project.
