One local student often gets asked to spell words wherever she goes.

Sadhana Matheswaran, a fifth-grade student at Pond Elementary School in Wildwood, will advance to the Regional Spelling Bee held on March 2 at McKendree University in Lebanon, IL.

In preparation of the competition, she tells Patch she studied a lot using the list her teacher gave her from the spelling bee website. "My mother and I would also type words into Merriam Webster checking for pronunciation and definitions," she said.

“She is a wonderful friend and an honor to have in class. I can always look to her as a role model for other students in class.”

Her very favorite word to spell? It is hors’doeuvre.

While she excels in spelling, Matheswaran said her favorite subject is math. During her free time she enjoys working on art projects with clay, playing the piano and reading.

Nisha Ravikumar, also a fifth grader, was runner up. The spelling bee was broadcast over Pond T.V. on Jan. 11.
