Lafayette Students Complete Intensive Summer Research Program
The STARS program allows high school students to work with nationally known scientists.
Four students from in Wildwood have wrapped up an intense, college-level research program at the University of Missouri, St. Louis (UMSL).
Felipe d'Andrea, Jerik Leung, Alan Lu and Vivek Vallurupalli worked alongside researchers from UMSL, St. Louis University and the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center on molecular biology projects. Along with conducting research, the four attended lectures by nationally recognized scientists.
Participants in the 2012 program include 82 students from 33 high schools in the St. Louis metro area, as well as California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa and Greece. One of those was another student, Jacob Cohen of Marquette High School. The STARS program also informs students about the process for applying to college and includes social activities such as bowling, a movie, an ice cream social and a trip to a St. Louis Cardinals game.
