Lafayette Lady Lancers Swim through Holidays

Lafayette High School's Lady Lancers' swimmers just won the annual Marquette Relays Swim Meet, and already have several state qualifiers.

Although winter break provides a break in the routine for area students, Lafayette High School's Lady Lancers' swim team remain committed to their typical regimen throughout the holidays by practicing everyday except Christmas Eve and Christmas day.

The Lafayette Lady Lancers' Swimming and Diving Team, led by head coach Todd Gabel and diving coach Jill O'Sullivan, won the annual Marquette Relays Swim Meet on Dec. 11 at Marquette High School.

The two-day meet ended with Lafayette on top with a score of 268, followed by St. Joseph's Academy at 244, and Parkway Central at 208.

The team took first place in five of the nine swimming relays, including:

  • 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:45:47, making it a new state qualifying relay. Swimmers were: Taylor Holz (sophomore) Hannah Chobanian (junior) Gretchen Cox (sophomore) and Laura Paskoff (sophomore).
  • 600 Individual Medley Relay with a time of 6:58:53. Swimmers were: Mae Riordan (freshman), Kelsey Kirchhoefer (junior), and Taylor Paskoff (senior).
  • 900 Progression Relay with a time of 9:19:47. Swimmers were: L. Paskoff, T. Paskoff, and Riordan.
  • 300 Fly Relay with a time of 3:08:00. Swimmers were: T. Paskoff, Holz, and Kirchhoefer.
  • 300 Back Relay with a time of 3:06:98. Swimmers were: Madeleine Wilmsen (freshman), Riordan, Cox.
  • The team also took second place in the 300 Breast Stroke Relay, and fourth in the 400 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay.

In addition to the new state cut in the 200 Free Relay, five swimmers achieved additional state qualifying times:

  • Kelsey Kirchhoefer in the 200 IM, 2:20:70.
  • Taylor Paskoff in the 100 Fly, 1:01:59.
  • Mae Riordan in the 200 IM, 2:17:43.
  • Madeleine Wilmsen in the 100 Back, 1:03:90.
  • Laura Paskoff in the 200 Free, 1:59:98.

The team also took third place overall in diving, with divers Alyssa Shaw (senior) Kelly Shaw (sophomore), and Sophie Gebauer (freshman).

In total, the team now has seven individual state qualifiers and three relay state qualifiers already this season.
