Even Principals Get In On Reading Week

Green Pines Elementary principals, teachers and students were good sports when it came to observing Read Across America Week in Wildwood Wednesday.

As part of the Rockwood School District’s 20th annual Reading Week, students at in Wildwood celebrated Wednesday with activities designed to foster a lasting love for reading.  In addition to playing book trivia and participating in a reading challenge, students and staff enjoyed dressing up as their favorite book characters.

"It certainly was a fun day at Green Pines," said Terry Wood, Green Pines school secretary. "Students were rather surprised to see principals and teachers dressed up when they came off buses and into the lobby."

Wood said students brought their favorite books with them to school.  "Our head librarian, Karen Hurst, was dressed as Amelia Bedilia, and today was filled with teachers in costumes reading to students in costumes."

Rockwood Reading Week coincides with Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and Read Across America, which is sponsored by the National Education Association, starting on March 2 each year. 

"This week, it's all about enjoying reading at Green Pines," said Wood.

She said a pot of gold picture also was established on a wall at the front of the school, and that students can write their names and the titles of books that they read on a coin to add to the pot.  "The line of coins is already trailing down the hallway," said Wood.
