Eureka Senior Swings Toward Golf in Illinois

A Eureka High School senior signed with a college east of St. Louis. Coach says it's a just reward for the player's commitment to the sport.

Matt Miklas, a senior at Eureka High School, will be attending the University of Illinois-Springfield.

Eureka Coach Craig Kennedy, said prior to this year, Miklas achieved the following:

  • Qualified for State three times
  • 3rd at Suburban West Tournament last year
  • 2nd at Poplar Bluff sectional last year, won medals at five tournaments last year
  • Second time 1st Team All-Conference.

Miklas also won the trophy for lowest stroke average in the Gateway Junior PGA in the summer of 2011.

This year, Miklas won a medal at the Mehlville invitational, and is a Sectional Qualifier by finishing T10 in probably the deepest district in the metro area.

"The opportunity to continue to play college golf is a just reward for the commitment Matt has made to golf," said Kennedy. "It is gratifying to see a young man succeed simply on hard work and dedication. Matt is completely self-taught, and because of that, he has an incredible instinct for actually 'playing the game' rather than executing mechanical swings. I am very happy for him."
