Eureka High Grad, Soldier Connects with Marquette Students Via Cookies
In the spirit of the season, Marquette High School students and staff are working to brighten the holidays for some U.S. troops in Afghanistan. It started by sending chocolate chip cookies to a 2004 Eureka High grad stationed there.
This week, Marquette High School students are baking 2,000 chocolate chip cookies, and collecting toiletries and movies to send to troops overseas and locally.
The project started with the idea to help Rick Branson, a 2004 Eureka High School graduate and former Marquette teacher, who is currently deployed to Afghanistan as a lieutenant in the Army National Guard.
With the support of the school community, the project expanded from helping Branson to the 1138th Combat Engineer unit, which has 138 soldiers.

“Marquette is a caring school community and this project is a wonderful example of that. Branson made a positive impact on our school community when he taught at Marquette, and this project is a great example of that.” said teacher and project organizer Ashley Porter in a Rockwood School District announcement.
“These soldiers sacrifice so much for our country, and this project is a way to show our gratitude.”
